Benamahoma: Trails, Water and Cultural Heritage

A riverside forest shapes the first section of the trail along the Río Majaceite. The Sendero del río Majaceite connects El Bosque and Benamahoma; its first section follows the Majaceite River through a riverside forest. When planning different stages, the varying trail lengths and formats help with orientation.

The Río Majaceite trail is a 10,359-metre circular route. The route is estimated to take around three and a half hours and is rated as moderately difficult. Swimming in the Río Majaceite is not permitted because the river is not designated as bathing water. A moderately difficult circular route requires different planning from a shorter linear trail.

A second connection is provided by the Sendero del Arroyo del Descansadero between Benamahoma and the Los Llanos del Campo recreational area. The trail is 1.2 kilometres long, linear and takes around 30 minutes; its difficulty level is low. The Arroyo del Descansadero trail leads towards the watercourse and the Fuente del Descansadero spring. Hidden in dense vegetation are the ruins of the Molino del Susto.

Water Tradition and Remembrance

In Benamahoma, the Río Majaceite trail recommends visiting the Ecomuseo del Agua Molino de Benamahoma. The museum is housed in the former Molino de El Nacimiento. The Ecomuseo del Agua explores the human use of water from prehistoric times to the present day.

The Ecomuseo del Agua includes reconstructions of traditional buildings, as well as equipment from the former flour and oil mills, fulling mills used for wool processing, bakeries and other water-powered trades. The museum therefore focuses both on the use of water and on the associated areas of work. The building designs and equipment offer different perspectives on the former trades.

Another noteworthy place is the Parque de la Memoria de Benamahoma. It opened on 30 April 2025 as a place of commemoration, reflection and remembrance for people affected by repression. The Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua houses a polychrome statue of its patron saint, donated in the 17th century by devotees from Seville. The church is Benamahoma’s most important religious temple.

The town’s distinctive traditions include the Fiestas y Luchas de Moros y Cristianos de Benamahoma. They are a historical re-enactment in which the participants face one another in close combat.

Forest and Regional Cuisine

The Pinsapar de Benamahoma is located in the Sierra de Grazalema Nature Park. It is a fir forest whose trees survived the retreat of the Ice Ages. The regional cuisine also has a clearly named connection to the town: Sopas cocías is a traditional peasant dish from Benamahoma made with stale bread, onion, garlic, olive oil, water, salt and bay leaf. A popular competition centred around Sopas cocías takes place in Benamahoma in February.
