Palmones by the Water

If you would like to discover Palmones by the water, Playa de Palmones is located on the left bank of the Palmones River and can be reached via exit 112 of the Autovía del Mediterráneo. The lower course of the Palmones River attracts numerous anglers who fish with a rod. The Palmones River and its mouth are suitable for canoeing and kayaking; stand-up paddleboarding can be practiced at the river mouth. Thus, different activities take place alongside one another on the same river: the beach is on the left bank, fishing takes place along the lower course, while the river and its mouth provide space for canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Nature and Birdwatching

The Marismas del Río Palmones comprise a dune chain nearly one kilometre long, a marsh crossed by numerous channels and tidal pools, and a wet zone containing the remains of a marsh that was previously drained. More than 350 bird species have been recorded in the Marismas del Río Palmones. For birdwatching, you can set up your telescope at the birdwatching lookout in Palmones, where visitors are permitted to set up telescopes. The landscape thus combines dunes, open water features, and the wet zone of the former marsh. Both the recorded number of species and the lookout belong to this marsh area; visitors can set up their own telescopes there for birdwatching.

Culture and Tradition

The Iglesia Pura y Limpia de Palmones was built on 16 March 1870. The church houses an image of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of Palmones and seafarers. The festivities of the Virgen del Carmen traditionally include a boat procession on the river. The church, image, and procession thus bring together a dated building, the local patron saint, and a celebration on the water. The Virgen del Carmen is associated both with Palmones and with seafarers, while the boat procession takes place on the river.

Construction of the Torre de Entre Ríos was ordered in 1588 as a watchtower between the Guadarranque and Palmones rivers. The Torre de Entre Ríos is protected under the generic declaration of the Decree of 22 April 1949 and Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage. A park with gardens surrounds the Torre and is named after it.

Historical Traces

Roman pottery fragments found in the former salt pans of Palmones bear witness to early settlement at this site. The Battle of the Palmones River took place on 12 December 1343. The historical evidence therefore ranges from the Roman pottery fragments from the former salt pans to the precisely dated event on the river in 1343. Both pieces of information relate to the history of Palmones, without describing the same period.
