El Santiscal between Reeds, Water and Roman History

El Santiscal showcases a characteristic combination of natural surroundings and cultural history. Today’s urbanisation borders the Cola del Embalse de Arcos nature area, a reed marsh covering around 100 hectares at the end of the Guadalete Reservoir. This nature area is home to the artificial Playa del Santiscal, known locally as “la Playita” and approximately 250 m long. El Santiscal thus brings together open water, a shoreline landscape and the character of a residential area.

Nature at the Arcos Reservoir

Two birdwatching sites are part of the Cola del Embalse de Arcos nature area. It is home to numerous waterfowl, including protected resident birds as well as seasonal and occasional visitors. The El Santiscal hiking trail also runs through the backwater of the Arcos Reservoir along the Guadalete River. There is water and marsh vegetation there all year round, including reeds, bulrushes and common reed. This creates a distinctive landscape of open water, dense greenery along the shore and a variety of birdlife.

Roman History in El Santiscal

Today’s El Santiscal urbanisation preserves a Roman rural villa from the imperial period. The well-known area of the Villa Romana de El Santiscal includes a peristyle, a basin, water pipes and several mosaics, including a depiction of Venus and Adonis. The building and floor coverings indicate that the villa was used throughout the Roman imperial period until the 6th century. Alongside its landscape, these historical traces give the area a clear cultural focus.

Beach and Water Sports

Sunbathing, swimming and other water sports are possible at Playa del Santiscal. The beach is located at Avenida del Príncipe de España 701 in El Santiscal, next to the Club Náutico. In addition to the beach, the Club Náutico de Arcos offers paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, boat trips and water skiing. The range of activities at this part of the reservoir therefore extends from relaxing hours by the water to a variety of activities on the water.

Hiking Around Arcos de la Frontera

For hiking planning, El Santiscal is connected to the downloadable routes of the Arcos de la Frontera hiking trail network. The El Santiscal hiking trail starts at Avenida del Príncipe de España in the El Santiscal urbanisation in Arcos de la Frontera. From Arcos, it can be reached via the A-372 towards El Bosque and a signposted turn-off to the urbanisation. For a more active day, you can consider the trail as a hiking option alongside the beach and water sports.
