Culture and History

More than 2,000 years ago, the Roman city of ASIDO CAESARINA was built in Medina Sidonia. It experienced an exceptional period of urban flourishing, befitting its legal status as a colony under Roman law.

The Cardo Máximo is a 15-metre-long section of the main street of the Roman city of Medina Sidonia. It was laid out in the 1st century AD, and its roadway is five metres wide.

The documented length of the section and the preserved width of the roadway make the dimensions of the Roman main street easy to understand in concrete terms. The Cardo Máximo thus represents a single, clearly delimited part of the ancient city layout.

The fortified urban landscape of Medina Sidonia is connected with the Islamic period. During this time, the present-day city walls, the Castillo and the Alcazaba were built.

Villa Vieja was one of four fortified complexes in medieval Medina Sidonia. Inside, remains of houses from the 16th century and the course of a paved street are still visible.

The surviving traces in Villa Vieja connect the medieval fortification with later structural remains. Both the houses and the course of the paved street have remained visible.

The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor la Coronada is a Gothic-Plateresque building. Its main structure dates from the 16th century and combines Renaissance, Gothic and Mudéjar elements.

The church's main altarpiece comprises 168 figures. They depict the most important mysteries from the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor la Coronada is currently open to the public as a monument.

In the immediate surroundings of Medina Sidonia is the Castillo de Medina Sidonia, a castle. In the wider regional area are the Marín Dolls Museum-Factory, a museum, ERA Cultura, a museum, and the Museo de Chiclana, also a museum.

Culinary Specialties

The specialties of Medina Sidonia's artisan bakeries include pan de campo, pan de leña, teleras, bobas, roscas, molletes, picos and regañás.

The selection therefore includes various traditional names for breads and baked goods. A pastry of Arab origin is made using traditional methods. Its ingredients include pure bee honey, almonds, hazelnuts, flour and breadcrumbs, as well as spices such as coriander, cloves, anise, sesame and cinnamon.

Nature and Recreation

The Hijuela de las Ratas - Padrón del Cernícalo hiking trail is a 5 km circular route of low difficulty.

The route is clearly described by its stated length and low level of difficulty. Its circular format also distinguishes it from a route for which the outward and return journeys would have to be specified separately.

In the wider regional area of Medina Sidonia is La Cachucha, a beach. Also located there are Playa Fuente del Gallo, a beach, Playa El Roqueo, a beach, and Playa de la Barrosa, also a beach.
