Vallejas between Sierra Valleja and Karst

Around Vallejas, a distinctive karst landscape, an archaeological site and specific hiking routes come together. Sierra Valleja lies in the centre of the province of Cádiz, within the municipality of Arcos de la Frontera, between the Guadalete and Majaceite rivers. At the same time, a hiking route leads from Vallejas to Arcos de la Frontera.

Geologically, Sierra Valleja belongs to the Subbaetic System and consists of dolomitic limestone. It includes a Jurassic karst upland. Cueva del Higueral de Valleja lies on the southwestern slope of Sierra Valleja, within the municipality of Arcos de la Frontera. Cueva del Higueral is a karst cave that formed about four million years ago through the emergence of a watercourse and consists of two interconnected chambers. Here, geology, the cave interior and the highland landscape occur within a closely defined geographical context.

Cueva del Higueral: Cave and Archaeology

The most recent excavation of Cueva del Higueral de Valleja identified ten Palaeolithic occupation layers containing archaeological and palaeoecological findings. Layer III of Cueva del Higueral de Valleja contains lithic industries attributed to the Upper Palaeolithic, with technological elements of the Solutrean. The cave therefore represents not only its geological formation, but also several archaeological occupation levels and a clearly identified Upper Palaeolithic classification.

The cave’s seasonal regulation is important when planning a visit: from May to August, visits to Cueva del Higueral are permitted exclusively as part of research or conservation projects. Anyone including this period in their travel plans must link the cave visit accordingly to a research or conservation project. The seasonal rule is therefore an integral part of visitor guidance for this destination.

Hiking Routes with Clearly Defined Route Profiles

An easy hiking route from Vallejas to Arcos de la Frontera is 15.29 km long, rated moderate, and has 307 m of ascent and 296 m of descent. The route passes a lake and a cave, which are listed as attractions along the route. The connection provides specific figures for planning the stages, including length, difficulty, ascent and descent; at the same time, it names Arcos de la Frontera as a fixed destination.

Another hiking route leads via La Loma de los Castillejos to the southern end of Sierra Valleja. The same topographical name is associated with a historic intervention: in 1917, the outflow was held back by the construction of a dam at the site in Sierra Valleja known as La Loma de los Castillejos. Thus, the routes around Vallejas focus both on the karst upland and the southern side of the mountain, as well as on a specific historic change at this location.
