Culture and history

Alcalá del Valle is home to the Dólmenes de Tomillos, an archaeological site comprising Chalcolithic burials dating from before 2000 BC. Dólmenes de Tomillos consists of a group of three passage dolmens. The group includes circular chambers. It also includes monolithic entrances and straight access corridors. The site additionally includes a menhir, considered the only example of its kind in the megalithic architecture of the province of Cádiz. Thus, burials, megalithic structures, and a single menhir form a shared archaeological context at this site.

The Museo Molino-Romano is now an office museum. There, visitors can learn about the customs and traditions of Alcalá del Valle throughout history. The Iglesia Santa María del Valle was built in the Baroque style between the 17th and 18th centuries. Its furnishings include a stone baptismal font. The basin features reliefs from the 17th century and comes from the nearby Monasterio de Caños Santos.

Another archaeological site is Almazara Fuente Grande. It includes structures associated with a Late Roman olive press. Thus, alongside the Chalcolithic dolmens, the town also has a history of Late Roman use.

Nature and hiking

Among the named lookout benches in Alcalá del Valle is the “Te quiero” bench. This bench offers views of the surrounding area. The Ruta del Viajero is a 5.5-kilometre hiking trail with a low level of difficulty. The stated duration for the route is 1 hour and 45 minutes. The route length, stated duration, and low level of difficulty directly indicate the trail’s time and physical demands.

The Ruta del Viajero passes through Mediterranean forests and dehesa landscapes. The trees mentioned there include holm oaks, cork oaks, and chaparro trees. Mediterranean forests and dehesa landscapes therefore shape the route; its vegetation includes holm oaks, cork oaks, and chaparro trees. The “Te quiero” bench complements this route and landscape information with a named viewpoint overlooking the surrounding area.
