On February 24, 2004, Jimena de la Frontera was declared a Historic Complex.
Culture and History
The Historic Complex of Jimena de la Frontera preserves narrow streets, small squares and irregular blocks of houses characteristic of urban planning during the Muslim period.
The Laja Alta rock shelter is located on the Altabacar estate in the municipality of Jimena de la Frontera.
Laja Alta is considered one of the most representative rock shelters of southern rock art.
The paintings at Laja Alta include anthropomorphic figures, animal representations, idols and boat scenes. The motifs combine human, animal and symbolic representations with scenes in which boats can be identified.
La Misericordia Church was built around the 15th century.
Today, it has been fully restored and converted into a multipurpose hall for the local municipal administration.
The castle complex rises above the ancient Roman city of Oba.
Trails and Nature
The Laja Alta trail initially passes through stands of wild olive trees, carob trees and strawberry trees, and then through a cork oak forest.
The trail along the Río Hozgarganta runs parallel to the river and around Cerro de San Cristóbal.
Its final section runs along a paved path and through passages carved into the rock.
Nearby there is an area where the water is deeper and swimming is possible.
The Canal de Artillería de Carlos III is now a place where visitors can enjoy the tranquillity and birds of Los Alcornocales Natural Park.
You can also discover more at Los Angeles.
