Espera among white streets and Roman history

In Espera, the guided Cultural Tourist Route leads up through the typical white streets on the slopes to Castillo de Fatetar and offers panoramic views of the town and the comarca.

The Ayuntamiento de Espera offers a Spanish-language guided tour, which must be reserved in advance. The Cultural Tourist Route can also be completed independently; QR codes can be scanned at each monument to be visited. It takes approximately two and a half hours. The route thus combines the climb through the town with visits to the monuments and the view from Castillo de Fatetar.

Culture

The Museo Arqueológico in Espera displays finds from the two most important archaeological sites, as well as from other smaller sites in the municipal area. The exhibition therefore brings together evidence from different archaeological contexts within the municipality.

The ground floor displays prehistoric tools dating from the Palaeolithic to the Late Bronze Age. These include shaped and polished stone tools, hand mills, and bronze and ceramic implements. The tools and implements reveal different ways of processing and using materials.

The first floor presents everyday life in the Roman cities of Carissa Aurelia and Esperilla through architecture, trade, houses, occupations, and clothing. The focus is therefore not only on individual buildings, but also on the areas of life associated with these cities.

History

Casa Cilla o Molino de los Diezmos is a Baroque building from the first quarter of the 18th century. It was specifically built to house the abolished tithes in the form of payments in kind. Its history therefore links the period of construction with its former function of storing these dues.

Casa Cilla o Molino de los Diezmos is the only cilla oil mill in the province of Cádiz. It has retained its complete functional structure and continued to operate as an oil mill with modern machinery.

Orientation

The meeting point for the route is the Oficina de Turismo on Calle Los Toros. There are parking spaces there, as well as a reserved space for visitors with reduced mobility. The facilities mentioned are therefore located at the starting point of the route.

Geographical setting

Castillo de Fatetar dominates the hill on whose slope Espera lies. It exercises direct control over the Río Salado and parts of the Campiña and the surrounding foothills. The geographical relationship between the castle, slope, river, and adjoining landscapes shapes the town's setting.

The Iberian-Roman city of Carissa Aurelia lies seven kilometres from Espera. Its necropolis preserves various forms of burial, including graves, mausoleums, and hypogea carved into the rock.
