El Bujeo – Nature, Trails and Views

The El Bujeo recreation area is located within the municipality of Tarifa, in a large eucalyptus plantation; holm oaks and cork oaks grow around the outer areas. The recreation area has picnic tables, barbecue facilities and parking areas. It also includes a spring with untreated water of excellent quality.

The El Bujeo recreation area can be reached from the N-340 via the forest track that branches off shortly after the Algeciras youth hostel when travelling from Algeciras towards Tarifa. The Puerto del Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro trail begins at the turnoff at kilometre 95 of the N-340 between El Pelayo and El Cuartón; the El Bujeo recreation area is located there.

Landscape and Birdwatching

The El Cabrito observatory is situated at an elevated location in the Sierra del Cabrito and offers views across the Strait of Gibraltar towards Jebel Musa in Morocco. It is used to observe the seasonal migration of soaring birds across the Strait of Gibraltar. The higher sections of the Río Guadalmesí trail offer views of the Strait of Gibraltar and opportunities to observe migratory and resident birds.

The Puerto del Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro trail passes streams lined with Algerian oaks, cork oaks, rhododendrons and ferns. The El Cabrito–Puerto del Bujeo trail runs through typical Mediterranean maquis with young cork oaks and reaches more lush vegetation at the streams. The Río Guadalmesí route passes through ravines with typical rainforest flora and offers views of the sea and the Guadalmesí Tower.

Hiking and Cycling

The one-way section of the linear Puerto del Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro trail is 22.004 km long, moderately difficult and takes three hours to walk. The El Cabrito–Puerto del Bujeo trail is a 9 km-long linear hiking trail with a walking time of four hours and a low difficulty level; it begins at the El Bujeo recreation area.

The Río Guadalmesí trail is currently temporarily closed. As a circular route, it is approximately 7 km long, has a moderate difficulty level and takes about three hours to complete; the start and finish are at the turnoff to the El Bujeo recreation area at kilometre 95 of the N-340.

The El Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro cycling route has been closed to public use since 29 December 2025 due to landslides caused by heavy rainfall. The Montes de Tarifa cycling route is approximately 27.340 km long, linear, moderately difficult and takes about three hours; it can also be started at the El Bujeo recreation area at kilometre 95 of the N-340. This cycling route offers views of the Sierra del Bujeo and the African coast. It leads to the Sierra del Bujeo, on whose southern slope the Río Guadalmesí lies.
