Tarifa: Fortress, Beaches and El Estrecho Nature Park

Culture and History
The Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno stands in Tarifa. The building is a National Historic Monument. It is a caliphal fortress, or alcazaba, dating from the 10th century. It is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest.
The Castillo stands at the highest point of Tarifa’s old town. It was built on the orders of Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III of Córdoba.
Tarifa is still a fortified city. It is one of the best-preserved cities of this kind in Spain.
A section of Tarifa’s battlements is open to visitors. It belongs to the Arrabal and Aljaranda enclosures. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the city. The surrounding area can also be seen from there.
Inside the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, the caliphal walls are particularly noteworthy.

Nature and Coast
El Estrecho Nature Park is protected. It is a marine-terrestrial area at the meeting point of the Mediterranean and Atlantic. The municipalities of Algeciras and Tarifa are part of it.
The municipality of Tarifa has almost 38 kilometres of beaches. They are mostly flat and have fine sand.
Routes and Orientation
The Los Lances route begins at the car park at Los Lances town beach. This is located by the Municipal Sports Stadium on the northwestern outskirts of Tarifa. Tarifa can be reached via the N-340.
Los Lances runs as a walking route through the wetland at Los Lances beach. The route is fully equipped with a wooden boardwalk. It has been adapted especially for people with disabilities.
The information point for El Estrecho Nature Park is located in Tarifa, in the La Peña area. It can be reached via the N-340 in the direction of Cádiz–Tarifa. It is about seven kilometres from Tarifa.
Roman Traces
The Baelo Claudia Archaeological Complex is located on the Ensenada de Bolonia in Tarifa. It showcases a Roman city with a forum, temples, basilica and market.
The complex also includes a theatre and baths. An industrial district and aqueducts are also part of the site. The city walls are completely preserved.
Water Sports and Birdwatching
There are kitesurfing schools in Tarifa. The number of people practising kitesurfing is growing.
Introductory windsurfing courses are offered in Tarifa.
Half-day and full-day birdwatching excursions in the province of Cádiz are offered from Tarifa.
