Conil de la Frontera – Beaches, Coastal Trails and Culture in Cádiz

Coast and Nature

Conil de la Frontera is a coastal town in the southwest of the province of Cádiz with extensive white sandy beaches and cliffs. Playa Castilnovo can be reached on foot via a footbridge over the Río Salado; access by car is not possible. Playa Castilnovo is characterised by the absence of development. Surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are regularly practised there.

The Sendero Rio Salado-Torre Castilnovo is 3.3 kilometres long, has a low level of difficulty and has been awarded the Sendero Azul distinction by ADEAC. The trail runs through protected wetlands with distinctive plant and animal species. The Sendero Rio Roche is an approximately 1.6-kilometre-long linear trail with a low level of difficulty. It runs through the Dehesa de Roche, a public woodland designated as a Site of Community Importance and integrated into the Natura 2000 network; the designation took place in 2006. The Sendero De Las Calas De Conil is 2.1 kilometres long, has a low level of difficulty and takes approximately 45 minutes.

History and Culture

La Chanca del Duque was built in the mid-16th century. Archaeological excavations at La Chanca documented the use of the complex, tuna fishing using almadraba traps, as well as objects from this activity and from the daily life of almadraba workers.

The Arco de la Villa is a medieval gate from the 16th century, designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural, and forms the main entrance to the historic old town of Conil. It was built in 1502 on the orders of Duke Juan de Guzmán. In the centre of Conil, the Arco de la Villa is an accessible cultural heritage site. The Centro Cultural Santa Catalina is a former main church from the 15th century that was converted into a cultural space. As a cultural and tourist attraction, the Centro Cultural Santa Catalina is open to the public and has an exhibition hall as well as rooms for additional events. The Iglesia de la Misericordia is a Baroque church from the 18th century. The Iglesia de Santa Catalina was rebuilt in the 19th century.

Gastronomy and Events

The Ruta del Atún de Conil includes a ronqueo demonstration on its opening days. The Ruta de la Huerta de Conil is a gastronomic event in April featuring menus made with fresh products from local agriculture. The Ruta del Atún de Conil is a gastronomic event held from May to June, focusing on tuna caught using almadraba traps. The Ruta del Retinto is a gastronomic event in autumn, focusing on beef from the Retinta breed with certification of origin.
