Roche in Andalusia between the Atlantic coast, nature and history

Nature and paths

On Andalusia’s Atlantic coast, the Pinar de Roche lies directly next to the settlement of the same name. It is located within the municipality of Conil de la Frontera in the province of Cádiz. The coastal pine forest stretches between dunes and sandy areas and covers approximately 689.18 hectares.

The landscape is not limited to the forest. Between the dunes and sandy areas of the Pinar de Roche, the designated sections of the paths alternate between riverbed, hillside and Mediterranean scrubland. At the Calas, views open out across the entire beach, while the Río Roche forms a distinct landscape area running parallel to the path of the same name. This creates different views of the coast, forest and river.

The linear Dehesa de Roche hiking trail runs through this landscape. The 5.8-kilometre route has a low difficulty level, begins at the Mirador de los Enebros and ends at the Área Recreativa Roche. From stands of sea juniper and savin vegetation, the path leads to a now-established pine forest planted in 1860. The route length, the two endpoints and the stated difficulty level provide immediate guidance for planning a day trip.

The linear Río Roche hiking trail is 1.6 kilometres long and also has a low difficulty level. It runs parallel to the riverbed of the Río Roche and connects Puerto de Conil with Urbanización Roche. The area covered by this hiking trail is home to the fartet, a small fish with ray-shaped fins that is classified as critically endangered.

At the Calas de Roche, a network of paths crosses Mediterranean scrubland above the hillside and enables walks with panoramic views across the entire beach. In addition to the pine forest, the landscape of Roche therefore includes dunes, sandy areas, riverbanks and scrubland.

Beaches and coast

The beaches Playa de Roche, Playa de Conil, Playa Mambo and Playa Cala del Aceite are located in the vicinity of Roche. Playa de Roche has lifeguard towers, a first-aid station and beach-cleaning services. Beach facilities also include access walkways and toilets.

At Playa de Roche, there is a designated zone suitable for surfing, with set usage times. Cala del Aceite can be reached via access lanes that branch off from the CA-4202 road near the mouth of the Río Roche.

History and culture

The Faro de Roche is housed in a lighthouse converted from a watchtower dating from the 16th century. This watchtower was part of the coastal defence line.

Several museums are located in the vicinity of Roche: the Museo Raíces Conileñas, La Chanca and El Taller Del Arte. The Castillo de Sancti Petri is also located nearby. Thus, in addition to coastal landscapes and paths, the surrounding area includes historic buildings and museums.
