Culture
The first polo field in Sotogrande was established in 1965. Every year, the Santa María Polo Club hosts the international Mansion 49 Torneo Internacional de Polo. The club has seven polo fields, four of which are considered “World Class”.
This means that the town’s polo offering combines a historic starting point, an annually recurring international competition and an extensive complex of fields today. The names and years place the development of polo in Sotogrande in a chronological context without reducing the town to a single event.
Nature
The estuary of the Guadiaro River lies in the heart of Sotogrande Costa. The Junta de Andalucía designated this area as a natural area in 1989. The wetland of the estuary provides a resting place for 144 different migratory bird species during their journeys. There are two boardwalk routes for walks through the estuary. One route is located on Paseo del Parque. Another route is located on Calle Jaime el Conquistador and leads towards the marina and Puerto Sotogrande.
The estuary therefore combines protected nature, migratory birdwatching and a network of paths with two distinct points of reference. The route on Paseo del Parque and the boardwalk on Calle Jaime el Conquistador each provide their own access to this landscape.
Coast and Marina
Puerto Sotogrande Beach is a 500-metre-long urban beach within the marina and has moderate surf. Water sports equipment can be rented at the beach. Accessible access ramps are also available. Showers are provided there. There are also toilets for people with reduced mobility.
With 1,382 berths, Puerto Sotogrande is the largest marina in Andalusia. The marina at Puerto Sotogrande has dozens of restaurants serving Mediterranean and international cuisine. At Puerto Sotogrande, visitors can stroll among navigable canals, artificial islands and waterfront areas.
The beach and marina thus form two clearly defined waterside areas: the beach is described as an urban beach within the harbour, while the marina is characterised by its berths, restaurants, canals, islands and waterfront areas. The different features of each area can be experienced separately during a stay.
Activities
Sotogrande offers opportunities for kayaking trips along the coast. Diving courses are also among the activities available there. At Puerto Sotogrande, you can try the sailing school of the Real Club Marítimo Sotogrande (RCMS). Trips on sailing boats, catamarans or motorboats are possible from Puerto Sotogrande. These trips take place at sea or are for fishing. Three different types of boats are available for the boat trips.
A golf course opened in 1964 and is located between the Marina de Sotogrande and the Guadiaro River. If you would like to explore Andalusia by bicycle, you can travel on roads or off paved routes in Sotogrande. The cycling routes mentioned include paths by the sea and through nature parks.
The activities therefore extend across the coast, harbour, sea, river environs and paths through different landscapes. In addition to kayaking, diving and sailing, three types of boats are available for boat trips, while golf and cycling offer further ways to explore the area.
For a stay in Sotogrande, holiday apartments are one of the types of accommodation that travellers can consider when planning their trip.
Other destinations include Guadiaro, Torreguadiaro and Pueblo Nuevo De Guadiaro.
