Ubrique: Leather Craft, Old Town and Roman Routes

In Ubrique, the history of leather craftsmanship is made visible through specific tools and products: Manos y Magia en la Piel displays machines and tools. The exhibition also includes leather goods made in Ubrique throughout history. The presentation therefore encompasses both the tools used and the leather goods produced in Ubrique.

If you would like to visit this part of the town's history, access to the permanent exhibition is only possible as part of a guided tour. Visiting the exhibition is therefore conditional on taking part in such a tour.

Culture and History

The CIHU San Juan de Letrán is housed in a church built in the 17th century. The church is located in the old town of Ubrique. At the CIHU, paintings, photographs, remains and specific documentation provide an overview of Ubrique's cultural heritage. The exhibition combines different forms of presentation: photographs and paintings are displayed alongside visible remains and specific documentation.

San Juan de Letrán has an unusual octagonal floor plan. The building is considered a particularly unique example of Neoclassical architecture, with no parallels in the wider surrounding area. The octagonal floor plan defines the architectural form of the church, while its location in the old town indicates the building's local context.

Since 2008, the Crujía de gamones has been recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. It is a tradition held annually in May in Ubrique. Decorated neighborhoods light bonfires, and they also make gamones explode. The tradition therefore includes both the decorated neighborhoods and bonfires, as well as setting off the gamones. Its recognition and the annually recurring date in May form part of its traditional designation and practice.

Routes and Archaeological Sites

The Sendero Calzada Romana de Ubrique is a walking route 3.4 kilometers long. It is listed as taking one hour. The level of difficulty is low. The route description therefore specifies a clearly defined distance, along with the stated duration and low level of difficulty.

It runs from Benaocaz to Ubrique along a well-preserved Roman road. In its described alignment, the route thus connects Benaocaz and Ubrique while following the preserved ancient road section.
