Caniles: Hiking Trails, Culture and Sierra de Baza

In Caniles, the Ruta Morax begins and ends at the GR-8101, shortly before Los Olmos. It runs through the Arroyo de Moras basin, east of the road from Caniles to Escúllar. The Los Olmos–Morax municipal route is 12.00 kilometres long and classified as moderate.

Hiking and Cycling

The Sendero del Tullio leads to the foot of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park and passes by the Arroyo Bodurria, where there is a water spring. The Sendero Guadalopón passes a century-old acacia tree, which is notable for its size and majestic growth. The Sendero Guadalopón crosses the Puente de Hierro; the railway used to run across this bridge.

The circular Caniles BTT route is 63.2 kilometres long, begins at the Centro Micológico in Caniles and leads into the Sierra de Baza Natural Park. The Caniles–Molineras route leads to the Bodegas Vilaplana, where wine can be enjoyed. The Caniles–Molineras route includes Las Molineras, a hamlet of Caniles, and the Fabriquilla del Oro, a heritage-listed building.

Culture

An 11.3-kilometre circular cultural and tourism route begins in the centre of Caniles. It leads to historic irrigation channels, the Fuente de los Caños and several mills. The route’s historic irrigation channels include Aguacía, Alcaicía, Guagüix, Manzanil and Cordobica, together with several branches.

Today’s Santa María y San Pedro Church stands on the site of Caniles’ former main mosque. On Saint Sebastian’s Day, the so-called Robo del Santo takes place in Caniles at 5 p.m. in front of Santa María y San Pedro Church. The person who receives the processional cross during the Robo del Santo becomes the Hermano de San Sebastián and must organise and finance the following year’s celebrations.

History and Buildings

The Torre de Caniles is considered a historically significant watchtower and is also known as the Albacara del Hadjí. The Torre de los Moros is 8.5 metres high and has loopholes and a masonry vault. It can be reached via the road from Baza to Caniles.

The single-nave Mudéjar hermitage Ermita de San Sebastián was built in the 18th century on the site of a former Arab cemetery. The Pósito Real de Caniles is a building from the second half of the 18th century. The Pósito de Caniles preserves more than two centuries of history and is part of the municipality’s cultural heritage.

The comprehensive renovation of the Pósito Real de Caniles has been completed; it was subsequently intended for use as a cultural and multipurpose building.

Nature and Regional Topics

The Centro de Interpretación Micológico hosts the Jornadas Micológicas del Altiplano Granadino. It organises excursions where the mycology of the Baza region can be explored on site. The centre presents information about the fungi and mushrooms of the surrounding region, including the popular níscalos.

The sixth Feria Agroganadera de Caniles took place on 8 and 9 November 2025. It featured livestock exhibitions, local products, tastings, competitions and activities for families.

Geographical Location

The GR-8101 regional road runs from Caniles through the Sierra de Baza Natural Park towards Almería.
