Rejano between the Sierra de Baza and a vibrant festival tradition

Rejano combines the landscape of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park with archaeological traces, a distinctive church and a festival tradition in honour of Saint Anthony. This creates an Andalusian destination where nature observation, local history and a specific cultural event come together.

Between the Sierra de Baza and the Arroyo Balax

Rejano lies in the Sierra de Baza Natural Park, in the basin of the Arroyo Balax at an altitude of around 1,100 metres. The village forms part of the irrigated river plains along the Arroyo Balax. The area around the stream also forms an ecological corridor of particular environmental value. These geographical features give the landscape its own character: elevated areas of the natural park meet an irrigated river plain that is significant as a habitat and connecting corridor.

Archaeological traces and the Church of San Antonio de Padua

Settlement remains from the Copper Age and Bronze Age are visible in Rejano. There are also archaeological sites dating from the Bronze Age. The history of the village is also reflected in the Church of San Antonio de Padua. It dates from the 19th century, is designed in the Mudéjar style and has a bell tower. Those interested in Andalusia’s historical layers will therefore find both very early settlement traces and a specific building from a more recent period in Rejano.

Festivities in honour of Saint Anthony

Saint Anthony is the patron saint of Rejano. In Rejano, the festivities in his honour are celebrated on 13 June; the date also includes a pilgrimage in honour of the patron saint. The festivities include the “Guerrilla de moros y cristianos”. This was revived after more than forty years without performances. The Fiestas de Rejano in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua were scheduled for the period from 13 June to 15 June 2025.

Getting to Rejano and routes around it

The access road to Rejano begins at the Puente de Valcabra, initially leads to Balax and then continues to Rejano. A side road in the Sierra de Baza Natural Park leads to El Rejano. The side roads leading to El Rejano are no more than five metres wide and have continuous inclines and moderate curve radii that do not allow high speeds. In the natural park, access and passage for visitors on public roads are generally unrestricted unless signs expressly indicate a restriction or closure.
