Carchuna: Beach, Fortresses and Trails

Playa de Carchuna is nearly 4 kilometres long. It stretches from the Faro de Sacratif to the leaning tower known as El Farillo. The Carchuna-Calahonda beach area offers opportunities for diving, fishing, sailing and surfing. Playa de Carchuna is used for fishing because of its rich marine life. It is suitable for board sports and sailing activities such as surfing and windsurfing.

Coast and Nature

The sea cliffs between Carchuna-Calahonda and Castell de Ferro form a diving area with diverse underwater flora and fauna. In the Carchuna-Calahonda area, there are routes and trails where visitors can explore the area's botanical diversity and impressive natural landscapes. The Mirador del Llano is a viewpoint in Carchuna. From there, visitors can look out over the sea and the entire Llano.

History and Culture

Castillo de Carchuna is a Christian defensive fortress from the late 18th century. It was built on the orders of Carlos III. The restored Castillo de Carchuna is open to visitors and is mainly used for cultural events and exhibitions. Its historical function as a fortress and its later cultural use coexist in the same building. Farillo de Carchuna-Calahonda is a modern-era coastal watchtower on Carchuna-Calahonda beach. It is recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) of special value.

Pinturas del Llano de Carchuna is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) of special value within the municipality of Motril. Fuerte de Carchuna is located in the middle of Playa de Carchuna. Fuerte de Tarfalcases is a natural shelter open in a rock face and enclosed by a wall.

Festivals

Carchuna's patron saint festivals take place in summer, in July and August, in honour of San Isidro Labrador and the Virgen de los Llanos. The festivals in Motril's districts include a communal meal and evening verbenas. The festival days combine tributes to San Isidro Labrador and the Virgen de los Llanos with the communal meal and evening verbenas. Routes

La Ruta de los Anejos is a circular route through Carchuna. It connects agricultural landscapes inland with sea views of the local beaches. These changing route sections follow the course between the agriculturally shaped inland area and the views of the beaches. La Defensa Costera is a 7-kilometre route with a low level of difficulty.

Carchuna-Calahonda is connected by the A-7 and N-340 roads. Calahonda is also one of the other places within this connected local area.
