Sacred Sites and City History
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza de Motril stands on the ruins of a Nasrid fortress. This fortress served Queen Aixa Alhorra as a residence.
Visitors to the Santuario can see the Marian chapel, the exhibition room for sacred objects and the bell tower. The Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación was built at the beginning of the 16th century over the former main mosque. It preserves remains of the Muslim minaret, known as the Torre de la Vela.
The route is called Motril Nazarí & Mudéjar and follows the medieval city layout. It also follows the city walls of Motril.

Local Culture
The Fábrica Azucarera Nuestra Señora del Pilar was inaugurated in 1883. It is Motril’s only sugar factory that has been almost completely preserved.
During a tour of the Fábrica Azucarera Nuestra Señora del Pilar, visitors can see original facilities such as the chimney, steam engines and production areas. The individual areas are among the preserved parts of the facility that can be seen during the tour.
The sugar factory thus preserves both the period of its historic inauguration and specific components of its former production. The chimney, steam engines and production areas are not merely names for the facility, but are part of the original equipment that can be viewed during the tour.
Nature and Coast
The Charca de Suárez wetland is located in the municipality of Motril. It is near Playa de Poniente.
More than 200 animal species can be observed in the Reserva Natural de la Charca de Suárez. Most of them are birds.
During the breeding season from March to May, visits to the Charca de Suárez are restricted to guided tours. These guided tours last one and a half hours.
A spacious, family-friendly beach in Motril has a promenade. It is suitable for activities and open-air concerts.
Active tourism opportunities in Motril include surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, hiking and cycling.
The port of Motril has significant fishing, commercial and leisure activities.

At Ron Montero, handcrafted production and the traditional ageing system of Solera and Criaderas are part of the continuing rum tradition. The tours are offered six days a week and in three languages; at Casa de los Bates, by contrast, the focus is on the tropical garden with seasonal products.
