Atalbéitar – Heritage, Festivals and Trails of the Alpujarra

Atalbéitar is one of the six settlement units listed in the declaration of the Alpujarra Media Granadina and La Tahá as a Historical Heritage Site. Many characteristic features of Alpujarran architecture have been preserved in the village.

Cultural Heritage and Architectural Features

Many tinaos have been preserved in Atalbéitar. Some span entire streets and form so-called adarves. Acequias run along some of the village streets.

At the edge of Atalbéitar there is a small washhouse; a well-preserved threshing floor stands at the entrance to the village. The washhouse is a single-storey, rectangular masonry building. Its flat launa roof rests on a timber framework; the roof overhang consists of stone slabs. It is noteworthy that the washhouse is separate from the other traditional functions of the water facilities.

Atalbéitar's church has an adjoining cemetery. Several traditional ovens have also been preserved in some houses; there is also a watering trough for animals.

Atalbéitar is probably the youngest settlement in the municipality and dates from the Islamic period. The name Atalbéitar derives from the Arabic words Harat and Albeytar. The Iglesia de la Virgen de Gracia in Atalbéitar dates from the 17th century.

The surviving elements are distributed across different areas of the village: streetscapes, water facilities, agricultural structures, religious buildings and traces of domestic life stand side by side here. As a result, various historical functions remain recognizable in the townscape of Atalbéitar.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Virgen de Gracia festival in Atalbéitar takes place on the second weekend of August. Atalbéitar celebrates the Virgen de la Candelaria on the weekend closest to February 2.

During the procession of the Virgen de la Candelaria in Atalbéitar, candles are lit, particularly at the exit of the church and then in the village square. The celebration includes rice prepared communally at midday and broth cooked over the festival fires during the day.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Ruta 2 from La Taha passes through Atalbéitar. It is part of the municipal set of seven routes that are signposted locally. Sendero 7 leads to Ferreirola and then returns via Atalbéitar to Busquístar.

The municipality lists Ruta 5, which passes through Atalbéitar, on Wikiloc. The circular Ruta J passes through the town centers of Mecina, Mecinilla and Pórtugos. It also runs through the surrounding agricultural areas and wooded slopes at higher elevations; the small settlements of Fondales, Ferreirola and Atalbéitar are nearby.

Atalbéitar can be reached via a steep road. The road is approximately 2 km long and branches off from the road between Pitres and Pórtugos after crossing the Río Bermejo. The natural features of Atalbéitar include ferruginous springs.
