From Laroles, the view extends through the gorge of the RÃo Adra to the Mediterranean. The area has holm oak and pine forests, as well as landscapes suitable for hiking. Laroles is an ideal starting point for hikes through the landscapes of the Sierra Nevada.
Nature and Trails
Parque RÃo Laroles is located on the RÃo Laroles in a deep, densely vegetated gorge. Its facilities include outdoor exercise equipment; the park is suitable for walking, hiking and relaxation. The GR-7 Laroles–Puerto de la Ragua section connects Laroles with Puerto de la Ragua and passes through high-alpine landscapes. The GR-7 Laroles–Válor section begins in Laroles and follows former connecting routes through the Alpujarra.
The SLA 272 Ruta del Castaño Milenario hiking trail begins at the viewpoint of the Ermita de San Sebastián in Laroles and crosses the RÃo Laroles. The Ermita de San Antón y San Sebastián dates from the 18th century. The route leads to a centuries-old chestnut tree whose large branches hang down to the ground. Fuente de Mauricio can be reached from Laroles via a short walk and was recently restored.
Laroles is located near the La Ragua mountain pass. Historically, it served as an important route for the movement of people and goods between the Guadix and Marquesado area and the Alpujarra.

Culture and History
The Casa Museo Doña Pilar displays hundreds of salvaged and restored objects in more than 15 rooms. Documentary audiovisual presentations convey the history and rural traditions of the Alpujarra. The Lavadero del Mercadillo is an old washhouse with stone wash basins that served as a meeting place for women in Laroles’ traditional daily life.
The Iglesia del Rosario has an 18th-century tower made of exposed brickwork. It is topped by an unusual Byzantine-style dome. The Fuente Plaza de Laroles, also known as Fuente de la Virgen, is located at Plaza de la Fuente in Laroles.
Festivals and Traditions
The Fiesta de San Sebastián is celebrated on January 20 in honor of Laroles’ patron saint and includes a procession as well as religious, cultural and sporting activities. The Procesión de los Manchos is the traditional procession in which the patron saints San Sebastián and San Antonio Abad are brought from the hermitage to the church. The faithful form two long lines and light the way with esparto torches.
Moros y Cristianos is celebrated on the weekend closest to January 20. In El Ejido, the event takes the form of a historical re-enactment between two opposing camps.
Un Teatro Entre Todos is an open-air theatre on the mountainside outside Laroles. It was built using traditional materials from the agricultural terraces typical of the region and serves as a versatile cultural venue. Every summer, a stone amphitheatre in Laroles, created from a former threshing floor, becomes the venue for the Me Vuelves Lorca festival.
At the fifth La Matanza de Laroles cultural event on December 6, 2025, the rural tradition of home slaughtering was presented through supplementary activities, an exhibition, a re-enactment and music. Laroles is known for its chestnut trees; their fruits are valued and in demand.
