Torvizcón: Culture, Festivals and Nature

Culture

The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Torvizcón was built in the Mudéjar style. As the church of Torvizcón, it was one of seven churches built in La Alpujarra at the beginning of the 16th century. During the Morisco rebellion, the church was burned down. On the village square stands the spring known as El Pilón, which dates from the 18th century.

The historic site of Sitio Histórico de la Alpujarra Media y La Taha is a legally protected cultural heritage area that also extends across Torvizcón. The Museo del Esparto “Agustín Góngora” is a museum of local ethnography in Torvizcón and remains open. It displays old objects from village life and agricultural work. The exhibits include life-size figures of people and animals made by the founder, José Joaquín Góngora. In the vicinity of Piedras Blancas, the Pisadora, the Prensa and the Trasegadora form an ethnographically interesting group of exhibits.

Festivals and Traditions

The Fiesta de los Chiscos is recognised in Andalusia as a festival of tourist interest. It includes large bonfires lit in honour of the saint in the individual neighbourhoods. The festival in honour of the Santísima Virgen del Rosario takes place in the first week of August.

The Semana Cultural de Torvizcón also takes place in the first week of August and includes sporting and cultural activities. During the celebrations surrounding the Marranillo de San Antón, the inhabitants of Torvizcón jointly raise and feed the traditional animal before it is intended to be raffled among the residents. The tradition of San Marcos involves eating in the countryside on 25 April and enjoying typical hornazos made of bread with a hard-boiled egg.

Wine and Crafts

The Lagar de los Rafaeles olive mill preserves the traditional architectural heritage of La Alpujarra. Bodegas La Divisa offers guided tours through the vineyards as well as the production and ageing rooms. A visit to Bodegas La Divisa includes a tasting of typical products from the Sierra de la Contraviesa and La Alpujarra.

Nature

The Alcornocal de La Haza del Lino cork oak forest is a dense woodland and the only surviving cork oak stand in eastern Andalusia. Most of the Sierra de la Contraviesa lies within the municipal area of Torvizcón. In the Barranco Barbacana, there are alluvial and riparian forests with poplars, broom and holm oaks.

The Rambla de Torvizcón rises in the Alcornocal de La Haza del Lino and flows into the Río Guadalfeo.
