River, Gorge and Protected Mountain Landscape
Monachil’s landscape reveals a close connection between its watercourse and mountain environment. The Monachil River crosses the entire municipality and is associated with springs, pools, waterfalls and protected river bends. At the same time, most of the municipality of Monachil lies within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and National Park. This creates two perspectives for exploring the area: the forms of the river and the extensive mountain landscape on site.
Los Cahorros and Trails Through Nature
Los Cahorros is a gorge carved into limestone by the Monachil River, with caves, narrow passages and suspension bridges; as a route along the Monachil River, it also offers opportunities for climbing. Griffon vultures, Eurasian jackdaws and crag martins nest on the steep vertical walls of Los Cahorros.
Hiking Routes with Varied Views
A hike around Cerro de Huenes passes through dense pine forests and offers mountain views. The route to Pico del Cerrajón climbs from Alto del Purche and provides a 360-degree panorama of the Sierra Nevada and the Vega. Another route through the history and traditions of Monachil offers views of the town, Granada and the surrounding Sierra. Forests, summit panoramas and local history each provide different focuses when planning hiking days in Monachil.
Historical Layers in Monachil
The Iglesia de la Encarnación was established as a parish in 1501 and built on the former main mosque of Monachil. Its main altarpiece dates from the 16th century and is attributed to the workshop of Pedro Machuca. The Cerro de la Encina archaeological site was inhabited between 2000 and 900 BC during the Bronze Age. The Casa Señorial Molino de los Aragones is considered the oldest and best-preserved historic residence in Monachil today; its oldest part dates from 1450.
Walk Through the Historic Town Center
A suggested walk along the southern slope of Monachil’s historic town center passes the façades of historic cave houses and offers views over the valley.
Dishes, Ham and Tapas Route
Monachil also has clearly identifiable culinary traditions. Olla de San Antón is a traditional Monachil dish that the municipality offers free of charge on January 17; most restaurants in the municipality serve it throughout the month. At Jamones Mariscal, visitors can observe the traditional process of salting and curing Monachil’s Serrano ham. Saborea Monachil is a multi-day tapas route held in spring and has existed since 2016. January and spring thus mark different periods for culinary discoveries.
