History, Name and Location

Puerto Lope lies along a natural route connecting eastern and western Andalusia, linking this location with a eventful local history. The name Puerto Lope is etymologically derived from Latin and means “port of the wolves”. During the French occupation in the 19th century, Puerto Lope was destroyed because of its resistance to the enemy. Puerto Lope was subsequently resettled. Thus, the interpretation of the name, the historical turning point and the rebuilding stand directly alongside one another.

Archaeological Traces in Puerto Lope

In addition to the area under investigation, a catalogued archaeological site called Pandera Pino was recorded. During archaeological surveys in the districts of Tiena, Los Olivares and Puerto Lope, several lithic and ceramic surface finds were documented. The named districts indicate several spatial points of reference, while Pandera Pino stands alongside the area under investigation as a separate site name. La Chaparra: Sports, Area and Picnicking
