The Castle of Lanjarón is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). The Carrera del Agua is a festival of national tourist interest that combines water, symbolism of purification and popular traditions associated with the Noche de San Juan. The central part takes place at midnight from 23 to 24 June; for one hour, participants throw water at one another in the town’s streets.

Culture and History

The Church of La Encarnación was built between 1555 and 1560 on the site of a former mosque. The Barrio Hondillo consists of narrow streets, small squares and tinaos clustered around Calle Hondillo and Castejón. The neighbourhood is already mentioned in connection with the Muslim period.

The Water Museum is an archaeological restoration project involving an old water mill, inspired by the Alhambra. Parque del Salao is crossed by iron-rich water in the form of a small stream. A path from Parque del Salao leads to Lanjarón’s 13th-century Arab castle.

Festivals and Regional Products

During the Cruces de Mayo, visitors can walk through the streets and neighbourhoods of Lanjarón and discover the individual crosses. During this festival, 24 crosses fill the streets, squares and corners of Lanjarón or are spread throughout the municipality. Many of the crosses offer typical products such as ham, cheese, buñuelos, chocolate and traditional sweets.

Lanjarón Gourmet offers workshops, cooking demonstrations and product tastings. The event was a renewed version of the annual agricultural and honey fair held in the municipality in previous years.

Water and Nature

Numerous springs with different mineral compositions rise in the area around Lanjarón. The Río Lanjarón is associated with lagoons, waterfalls and clear streams flowing down from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The Balneario de Lanjarón is considered a destination for health and beauty tourism because of the mineral waters of its springs.

Forests and Wildlife

The Museo de la Miel is a beekeeping interpretation centre dedicated to preserving biodiversity and is located in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. It displays beehives, including some from the Arab period, and houses a 17th-century wax press from Zamora.

The Castañar de la Huerta de las Monjas provides a habitat for badgers, wild boar, numerous bird species and brown trout. The area includes the Huerta de las Monjas recreational area. The Castañar de la Huerta de las Monjas is recommended year-round, especially before the chestnut trees lose their leaves.

Approximately seven hours is considered a guideline for the round trip on the Sendero Lanjarón-Caballo; the duration may be longer. The updated materials from the tourist information office include an updated town map of Lanjarón to help visitors find their way, as well as a special leaflet on the officially classified trail network, organised by categories and difficulty levels.
