Nigüelas: Natural Monument, Culture and Views

Nature

The Falla de Nigüelas natural monument is located in Nigüelas and is a protected geological site. It is integrated into the Sierra Nevada Natural Park as well as the Sierra Nevada ZEC and ZEPA. At the fault, the fault plane, its inclination and the extent of the displacement are clearly visible; the natural monument is also equipped with information panels.

The Mirador de Rasuela offers excellent views of the Valle de Lecrín, the Sierra Nevada and the deep gorge of the Río Torrente. The Cerro Pintado summit is located in the surroundings of Nigüelas. In the wider region around Nigüelas are the three viewpoints Mirador del Cerro del Sol, Mirador del Castañar and Mirador San Nicolas.

The landscape around Nigüelas thus combines different geographical settings: the fault itself is located in the town and is simultaneously integrated into the protected areas of the Sierra Nevada. The Mirador de Rasuela looks out over the Valle de Lecrín, the mountains and the gorge of the Río Torrente. Culture and History

You can visit the Almazara de Las Laerillas in Nigüelas; it is a former olive mill. The Almazara Las Erillas dates back to the 15th century and is well preserved. The Mudéjar church of San Juan Bautista contains magnificent sculptures of Granada's religious art. The parish church of Nigüelas dates back to the 16th century.

The Casa de los Zayas has a Renaissance portal and gardens in the style of French Romanticism. The Jardín de los Muller is located next to the Palacio de los Zayas and combines an orchard with a garden there. Several music competitions and concerts take place in Nigüelas throughout the year.

The historic sites are therefore located both within Nigüelas and in the nearby and wider surrounding area. In Nigüelas itself, the former olive mill, the two churches, the Casa de los Zayas and the Jardín de los Muller are among the cultural sites mentioned. The Almazara Las Erillas retains its classification as dating from the 15th century, while the parish church is assigned to the 16th century.

The patron saint festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias take place in Nigüelas in the third week of September. The Entierro de la Zorra has been maintained for decades as the conclusion and highlight of the festivities.

The ancient site of Acueducto de Cijancos is located in the surroundings of Nigüelas. The ruins of Atalaya de Dúrcal are located in the nearby area.
