Cortes de Baza: Cultural Heritage and Sierras

Sierras, Reservoir and Hoya de Baza

Cortes de Baza is surrounded by sierras and mountainous landscapes and lies north of the end of the Negratín Reservoir. The Hoya de Baza, where Cortes de Baza is located, contains archaeological evidence from prehistoric, Argaric, Iberian, Phoenician and Roman cultures. The landscape and settlement area therefore stand alongside a past shaped by several successive cultures.

Church with a Mudéjar Coffered Ceiling

The Iglesia de la Anunciación is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). It was built between the 16th and 17th centuries and has a Mudéjar coffered ceiling made of pinewood. The ceiling was crafted by Moriscos from the surrounding area. The church thus combines architectural history, protected status and a specific artistic and craft detail.

Torre de la Cañada and Castillo de Abrantes

The Torre de la Cañada has a circular ground plan, a diameter of 3.64 metres and is approximately 7 metres high. Together with the castles of Benamaurel, Cortes de Baza and Castril, the tower formed part of the border defence system. It is located relatively close to the municipality's main town and can also be seen from the district of Las Cucharetas.

The remains of the Castillo de Abrantes are located near the town's church. The Castillo was a small Arab fortress built between the 11th and 12th centuries to house the area's inhabitants. After its demolition in the 1980s, remains of walls made from very solid rammed earth have survived to this day. The tower and fortress remains thus represent different forms of historical fortification.

Washhouse and Living Local History

The washhouse of Cortes de Baza is also part of the town's cultural character. It was a meeting place and a place of mutual support for the women of the town. Alongside churches and defensive structures, this site thus points to a social aspect of everyday life in the past.

Camino Espiritual del Sur

A branch of the Camino Espiritual del Sur begins in Campo Cámara within the municipality of Cortes de Baza. It leads to the old road to Castilléjar and is approximately 30 kilometres long. The approximate route length provides a clear framework for planning the stages, while the route connects two named places.

Hermitage and Semana Santa

The Ermita de los Santos Médicos is located in the centre of Cortes de Baza and contains figures of Saints Cosmas and Damian. Semana Santa in Cortes de Baza includes a procession on Palm Sunday from the Ermita de los Santos Médicos to the church. Religious buildings, figures of saints and the processional route thus provide another specific insight into the town's history.
