Huéscar: Cultural Heritage, Landscape and History

Culture and History

In the historic centre of Huéscar stands the Casa de los Penalva, one of Andalusia’s most significant and distinctive modernist buildings.

The building has a monumental façade, representative Art Nouveau interiors, elements of historicist eclecticism, an inner courtyard inspired by the Alhambra and a neo-Gothic oratory.

The Casa de los Penalva is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural with the classification Monument in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage.

The Museo Interactivo Ciudad de Huéscar is housed in the Convento de San Francisco.

Its tour takes visitors through five rooms, each dedicated to a specific aspect of Huéscar’s history and culture.

The Torre del Homenaje is a restored medieval part of Huéscar’s former fortifications and serves as a viewpoint from which the city’s former defence system can be understood.

As a square defensive structure made of rammed earth, the Torre del Homenaje formed part of Huéscar’s former Muslim fortress.

The Piedra del Letrero is located in the municipality of Huéscar (Granada), on the path to the Sanctuary of the Santas Mártires.
