Láchar: Castle, Nature and Festivals

Láchar combines striking cultural monuments with a clearly defined hiking experience and festivals firmly rooted in the annual calendar. One of the main attractions is the Castillo-Palacio de Láchar, which is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The visitor programme at Castillo de Láchar includes a guided tour of the Nasrid tower dating from the 14th century. During the visits, the monument is presented through the stories of historical figures, including Queen Aixa, Boabdil’s mother, Florinda La Cava and the Duque de San Pedro de Galatino.

Castle, church and archaeological traces

The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario is also part of the town’s history; it was built in the 20th century. The Los Hornillos archaeological site lies in the western part of the municipality of Láchar. It includes storage silos or pits dating from late antiquity or the early years of the Middle Ages. Thus, Láchar brings together a BIC-protected castle, a Nasrid tower, a 20th-century church and an archaeological site with different historical periods.

Hiking trail, Pinar and Puente Eiffel

The Ruta del Señorío is an 8.6-kilometre circular hiking trail with an estimated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. It consists of 90 percent forest tracks and 10 percent surfaced paths. With its length and estimated duration, the route provides a clear time frame for planning the hike. Another scenic destination is the Pinar de Láchar, an extensive area near Láchar where visitors can hike, have a picnic, visit the Ermita de San Isidro and enjoy other outdoor activities.

The Puente Eiffel is also located near Láchar, a bridge between the municipalities of Láchar and Pinos Puente. It was built in 1897 and designed by the school of the French engineer Gustave Eiffel. In this way, a circular hiking trail, an extensive area for outdoor activities and a bridge dating from the late 19th century come together within a compact thematic area.

Festivals between pilgrimage and regional cuisine

Láchar’s festival calendar is linked to religious traditions and local dishes. The popular pilgrimage in honour of Saint Isidore the Labourer takes place on the Saturday nearest to 15 May and leads to the area known as Los Pinares. Láchar’s patron-saint festivities take place in the penultimate week of August in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, the town’s patron saint.

Every year on 25 April, Láchar celebrates Día de San Marcos. The occasion includes traditional hornazos, oil rolls, as well as snacks with chocolate and broad beans. The fixed dates and connection with specific foods make the local traditions distinct occasions within the annual calendar.

Orientation via the A-92 motorway
