Las Gabias: Torreón, Roman Villa and Patron Saint Festivities

Culture and History

The Torreón de Las Gabias is a Muslim alquería tower dating from the Nasrid period. It dates from between the 13th and 15th centuries.

The interior of the Torreón de Las Gabias is accessible. It contains well-preserved examples of stucco work and tile decoration. On weekdays, the Torreón de Las Gabias can be visited free of charge.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves dates from the late 16th century. It stands at the end of Calle Ermita in the old town of Las Gabias. Its main window is made of stained glass and depicts the Virgen de las Nieves.

The religious architecture of Las Gabias also includes the Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación, which is distinguished by its architectural beauty. The Fiestas Patronales are celebrated in honor of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves Coronada. They include a solemn procession of this patron saint through the town’s main streets.

The traditional Fuente del Vino is also part of the Fiestas Patronales. Thus, the festivities combine the religious tribute, the procession through the town and a distinctive traditional element.

Another historic site is the Villa romana de Gabia. It includes a semi-subterranean gallery that is 30.50 m long and has a barrel vault. Ten windows or skylights provide natural light for the gallery. Its decoration consists of marble.

The historical heritage of Las Gabias thus extends from the Muslim alquería tower dating from the Nasrid period, through late medieval and religious heritage, to the Roman villa. At the ermita, the stained-glass window depicting the Virgen de las Nieves illustrates the religious furnishings. During the Fiestas Patronales, devotion to the patron saint, the procession through the main streets and the traditional Fuente del Vino come together.

Landscape

Las Gabias lies on a plain along the Río Dílar. Significant irrigated areas are located on both banks of the river.

Las Gabias is also situated on the boundary between the Vega and the Secano.

The plain, the Río Dílar and the irrigated areas on both banks form the municipality’s geographical setting. At the same time, its location on the boundary between the Vega and the Secano marks the transition between the two aforementioned landscape areas.

Sports

Las Gabias is home to the 18-hole Campo de Golf Los Cosarios.

Las Gabias is also home to the Campo de Tiro Olímpico Juan Carlos I Olympic shooting facility. This facility has modern amenities.

Las Gabias therefore offers both the Campo de Golf Los Cosarios and the Campo de Tiro Olímpico Juan Carlos I as named sports facilities in the town. The golf course is specified as having 18 holes, while the shooting facility is described as Olympic and equipped with modern amenities.
