Dúdar between the Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Huétor Nature Park

Geographical setting

Dúdar lies in a depression between the Sierra Nevada mountain range and Sierra de Huétor Nature Park. The Río Aguas Blancas crosses the municipality of Dúdar from east to west, passing through the town itself.

Landscape, Plants and Animals

The Tajo del Reloj is visible from Dúdar's village square. The shadow on one of the walls of the Tajo del Reloj indicates solar time. In addition to poplars, holm oaks, olive trees, cherry trees, pines and chestnut trees, Dúdar's native vegetation also includes other fruit trees and plants of the Mediterranean scrubland. Wild boars, foxes, eagles and ibex have been sighted in the Dúdar area.

Historic Trails and Hikes

A historic trail that is still preserved leads from Beas de Granada via Los Arrites, Cortijo de Belén, Llano de la Perdiz and Jesús del Valle to Granada, passing through Dúdar along the way. The hiking trail named Cuesta de Las Cabras begins on the left bank of the Río Aguas Blancas, passes through the landscape area known as Las Umbrías and reaches Güéjar Sierra. The circular hike entitled “Dúdar: Río Aguas Blancas - Mirador de Quéntar - Trincheras de la Ventanilla” begins in Dúdar and follows the Río Aguas Blancas to the Mirador de Quéntar, the Mirador de la Presa de Quéntar and the Trincheras de la Ventanilla.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada in Dúdar dates from the 17th century. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Trenches from the Spanish Civil War are located on the Cerro de la Cruz. The Canal de los Franceses carried water from the source of the Río Aguas Blancas to a gold-washing site at the Cerro del Oro mine. Three surviving structures of the Canal de los Franceses are known as Las Torres, Puente de la Línea and Casa del Cigarrón. The Ermita del Cristo del Almecí is also located within the municipality of Dúdar. The Romería del Santo Almecí, also known as Santo Belloto, is associated with 1 November. It includes a mass and a procession.

Crafts and Cuisine

Several women in Dúdar continue to preserve the traditions of bobbin lace, crochet and embroidered tulle. Works from this tradition are exhibited during Semana Cultural. The dish Papas con bacalao is considered the signature dish of Dúdar's cuisine. Vino mosto is a typical traditionally produced product from Dúdar.
