La Zubia: Arab Baths, Mudéjar Art and Paths into the Countryside

Culture and History

The Baños Arabes de La Zubia were built between the 12th and 13th centuries as a rural Muslim bathhouse. Two rooms of the complex are completely preserved; remains of a third are visible. The Baños Arabes de La Zubia are protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is also protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It was built in the second half of the 16th century and is considered one of the finest examples of Mudéjar art in the province of Granada. Its main altarpiece was designed by Ambrosio Vico in 1614 and contains a painting made by Pedro de Raxis between 1616 and 1617.

The Ermita del Calvario, also known as the Ermita del Santo Sepulcro or Ermita de San Antonio, is an example of La Zubia’s popular religious architecture from the 18th century and marked the end of La Zubia’s Via Crucis. The Iglesia de San Luis del Real and the monastery gardens are designated visitor attractions; from there, Queen Isabella the Catholic watched the Battle of La Zubia in 1491. The Ruta del Agua runs along irrigation channels, mills, water basins, orchards and small aqueducts more than 800 years old. As a hiking route through the countryside and Vega of La Zubia, it explores the history of water use.

The Itinerarios Didácticos de La Zubia comprise La Zubia Monumental, traditional crafts and the Parque Natural as themes of the educational tours. The entire carpetmaking process is carried out at the ALP CARPETS facilities in La Zubia – from designing and dyeing the wool, through setting up the looms and knotting, to completion. La Alpujarreña produces hand-knotted carpets in La Zubia based on traditional regional patterns and uses the Alpujarran and ghiordès knots.

Nature and Trails

The Parque de las Canteras covers 56.62 hectares and has sports circuits and recreational areas. The Canal de la Espartera–Arenales del Trevenque trail is reached from La Zubia via Cumbres Verdes and the forest track to the Los Alayos viewpoint; the trail begins at this viewpoint. The Haza Larguilla trail is reached from La Zubia via the road to Cumbres Verdes and then the forest track to Collado Sevilla, where the trail begins. Access to the Sendero Sulayr from La Zubia is via the road to Cumbres Verdes and then a 10 km-long forest track to the Jardín Botánico de La Cortijuela.

Festivals and Local Events

The X Fiesta de la Bicicleta de San Antonio starts and finishes at the square next to the Local Social. The XIV Noche de Habaneras y Limonada takes place in the gardens of the Convento S. Luis el Real. In 2026, the Cruces de Mayo distributed throughout the municipality of La Zubia are associated with the tradition of huevo y rosca. The 2026 Carnival in La Zubia is intended to reach its climax with the Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones Carnavalescas at the Centro Cultural Carlos Cano.
