The Festividad del SantĂsimo Cristo de la ExpiraciĂłn has been celebrated continuously since 1815.
In 2020 and 2021, the celebration was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The “Feria Hecho en La Alpujarra” takes place at the same time as Semana Santa.
This feria includes demonstration workshops on ceramics and iron and clay sculpture.
The feria also includes demonstration workshops on basketry and the production of jarapas.
With the AlfarerĂa Cacheriche, Ă“rgiva preserves a traditional pottery workshop.
The workshop continues to use a kiln to produce ceramic objects.
Traditional dishes passed down in the Alpujarra include “Sopas de Pan y MaĂz”, “PimentĂłn de Bacalao” and “Torta de Higos Secos”.
History
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación was built in 1580.
Its construction took place after the end of the Morisco revolt in the Alpujarras.
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación contains an image of Cristo de la Expiración.
This image is attributed to the school of MartĂnez Montañés.
The Casa Palacio de los Condes de Sástago was built over the remains of a Muslim alquerĂa tower.
The Muslim alquerĂa tower dates from the 16th century.
The Casa Palacio de los Condes de Sástago is one of the few buildings of comparable size preserved in the comarca.
The Ermita de San Sebastián stands on the foundations of a Visigothic fortress.
Literature and Art
The Aula Cervantina “AgustĂn MartĂn Zaragoza” has copies of “El Quijote”.
These copies are available in more than 80 languages.
The collection also includes studies and treatises on the work of Miguel de Cervantes.
The Sala de Exposiciones de Pinturas y Esculturas con Motivos Quijotescos houses paintings and sculptures.
The paintings and sculptures there recreate passages from “El Quijote”.

The Plaza Alpujarra is framed by two Tinaos.
Both Tinaos are approximately 10 metres long.
Pictures are painted on the columns of these Tinaos.
Each of these pictures represents a village in the Alpujarras.
