Culture, Water and Local History

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is located in Cúllar Vega. It belongs to the group of Mudéjar churches. The large Aljibe cistern is located in a public square in Cúllar Vega. It collects and stores water from the Genil and Dílar rivers. The cistern distributes this water. Roman millstones are located in a garden on the Paseo de la Aurora in Cúllar Vega.

Jueves Gordo is celebrated every year in Cúllar Vega. It takes place on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. The festival occurs immediately before Carnival. Traditional hornazos are eaten during the event. Traditional games are also held.

The names “Sopa de Maimones”, “Gachas de Cuscurrones” and “Gachas de picante” are associated with the winter season. “Gachas de Cuscurrones” is associated with toasted bread and sugarcane honey.
