Dólar: Mountain Landscape, History and Festivals in the Sierra Nevada

At an altitude of 1,200 metres at the foot of Chullo in the Sierra Nevada, Dólar reveals a concentrated, high-altitude side of Andalusia.

Mountain Landscape around Dólar

On the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, dense reforested pine forests alternate with individual strips of holm oaks. In Sierra Nevada National Park, there are several waterfalls that are several metres high. Chullo reaches an altitude of 2,609 metres, shaping the mountainous character of the surrounding area. One route leads through the Barranco de la Piedra and the Paraje de las Juntas to Dólar. This gives you a landscape that is not limited to a single viewpoint, but brings together forest, ravines, water and high mountains.

Mudéjar Architecture and Historic Sites

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación is a Mudéjar-style building with a single nave, a ribbed vault and a three-storey tower. The Iglesia de La Anunciación was begun in the 17th century and largely completed in the 18th century. Its presbytery is covered by a Baroque dome on pendentives. During the restoration completed in 2005, Baroque paintings were discovered beneath the whitewash of an arch providing access to a side chapel.

The Baños Árabes de Dólar date from 1566 and consist of three vaulted rooms in the Nasrid style. A prior reservation or appointment is required to visit the Baños Árabes or the Centro de Interpretación del Agua de Al-Andalus. The Castillo de Dólar is considered a small fortification dating from the 12th century. The existence of Dólar Castle has been documented since the 12th century; the hill with its remains offers views of the town and its surroundings.

The Ermita de San Andrés is also part of Dólar’s architectural character and is a Mudéjar-style building. It is located outside the town on the road to Ferreira, next to the cemetery. This places another historic site in a clearly defined setting, while the churches and Arab baths provide distinct cultural highlights.

Festivals with Their Own Annual Rhythm

The Feria in Dólar takes place on the third Sunday in August and includes parades, games and decorated floats. The San Antón festival is celebrated on 17 January. Traditionally, firewood and thorny brush are collected for the occasion and large fires are lit.

The celebrations in honour of the patron saint San Andrés take place on 30 November. As early as 21 November, the statue of the patron saint is brought from the Ermita de San Andrés to the church; on 30 November, a procession returns it to the hermitage.
