Nature and Trails

Lanteira is one of the municipalities in the Province of Granada located within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. Route B: Lanteira–Postero Alto–Lanteira begins at Cerro Redondo above Lanteira. This starting point is close to sports facilities. Waterfalls freeze in winter along the upper section of this route. The frozen waterfalls are popular with mountaineers who are passionate about ice climbing.

The Ruta de los Molinos Harineros is a circular trail with a low level of difficulty. It passes old watermills of medieval origin. The trail runs along the Río del Pueblo and Río del Barrio rivers. The Sendero al Área del Río Barro also passes through Lanteira, following a route through a mountain landscape.

The final section of the Guadix–Jérez del Marquesado route heads towards Lanteira through old orchards. Almond trees line the edges of the terraces along this section. The route also passes along paths between scree and irrigation channels. El Peñón de Lanteira is an exceptional natural geological viewpoint. The Mirador Las Cuevas viewpoint is located in the area around Lanteira. The Alto de la Carrasca summit lies in the immediate vicinity of Lanteira. The Cerro de Juan Canal mountain is also located in the area around Lanteira.

Between river courses, irrigation channels, orchards, scree paths and mountain summits, a landscape emerges that combines diverse natural and cultural-landscape elements. The viewpoints mentioned above add geological and topographic vantage points in the area around Lanteira to this sequence.

Culture and History

The Minas de Alquife mining complex also extends across the municipality of Lanteira. The Minas de Alquife are of historical, geological, landscape, techno-industrial and ethnological significance.

Outside the church in Lanteira, a plaque and a bust commemorate Blessed Medina Olmos. Medina Olmos was from Lanteira. The church on Lanteira’s main square is a 17th-century church building. It is one of the last churches in the region built in the Mudéjar tradition. The church in Lanteira has simple coffered ceilings. Original polychrome decoration can be found on the tie rods and the surrounding frieze.
