History and Culture
Neolithic remains have been found in the municipality of Jayena, particularly in La Mesilla. The finds suggest a site that has been inhabited since that time.
Jayena was apparently founded during the Islamic period. At that time, the town was called “Chayyana”. This historical name belongs to that period and is not used as the town’s current name.
The Centro de Interpretación de Jayena is housed in the municipality’s former water reservoirs. The renovated building contains permanent and temporary exhibitions about the origins of the town. The Centro de Interpretación de Jayena promotes the communication of cultural heritage through workshops and activities. These activities include the distillation of essences and the production of natural soap.
The Iglesia Parroquial del Santísimo Sacramento dates from the 18th century. In the 20th century, it was rebuilt after being damaged by an earthquake. The remains of many watchtowers from the period of Muslim rule can be found at Peña Gorda. The Antigua Fundición Romana was also used by the Arabs when they inhabited the area.
