Íllora: Church, Thermal Baths and Sierra de Parapanda
Culture and History
The Iglesia de la Encarnación in Íllora was built from 1541 onwards; the construction of the main chapel and tower was supervised by Diego de Siloé. The church is predominantly designed in the Renaissance style, while also displaying Gothic influences. Since 20 March 1980, it has been listed in the Registro General de Bienes de Interés Cultural. The church therefore reflects the construction period, the responsible construction supervision and the combination of two stylistic influences. The register entry, as a dated piece of information, is also part of the building's history.
The Pósito was built in the first half of the 18th century as a grain storehouse. During the Napoleonic occupation from 1810 to 1812, it served as accommodation for French troops. Today, the Pósito houses the premises of the Museo Municipal of Íllora. These details comprise three clearly distinct phases of use: its construction as a storehouse, its use during the occupation and its current museum use. The Pósito thus combines architectural history, local history and a present-day cultural function in a single building.
Permission to establish the Convento de San Pedro de Alcántara was requested in 1669. After its restoration, the Castillo de Íllora can be seen in the landscape.
Archaeology
The Roman thermal complex includes a well-preserved boiler, black-and-white tessellated mosaics and three pools with drainage pipes. The site thus preserves different components of Roman bath architecture in one place. The heating technology, mosaic design, pools and drainage pipes are each among the named elements of the complex and make its architectural structure comprehensible.
Landscape
Within the municipality of Íllora, the Cuesta de Cambril viewpoint is located on the southern slope of the Sierra de Parapanda. Within the municipality, near the hamlet of Alomartes, the signposted circular trail “Área Recreativa de Alomartes Cerro de los Santos” begins. This locates both a named viewpoint on a particular slope and a signposted trail near a hamlet within the municipality.
The Parapanda Alomartes recreational area can be reached from Íllora via the A-336 in the direction of Alomartes. At the entrance to the village, turn right and continue for approximately 900 m to the car park. The directions therefore specify the road, the direction of travel, the turn at the entrance to the village and the approximate distance to the car park in this order.
Music
Parapanda Folk 2026 in Íllora is the 35th festival of roots music. The IX Foro Folk is an annual gathering about roots music and intangible cultural heritage, featuring public lectures, discussion panels and presentations at the Museo Municipal de Íllora. The festival is thus placed in time and within its series through its 35th edition; the forum is additionally characterised by its annual rhythm, its subject and the event formats mentioned.
Sightseeing
The Iglesia de Santa María de la Encarnación can be visited free of charge on Saturdays from 18:00 to 22:00 from May to September. From October to April, free visits are possible on Thursdays from 16:30 to 20:30. Sightseeing is therefore specified in two seasonally separate periods, each with its own weekday and evening time slot. The stated times differ between May to September and October to April.
