Guájar-Fondón Between Gorges and the Sierra

Together with Guájar-Alto and Guájar-Faragüit, Guájar-Fondón belongs to the municipality of Los Guájares in the Sierra of the same name. Together with the Sierra de Lújar, this forms the first mountain section on the route towards the southwestern side of the Sierra Nevada. Guájar-Fondón lies in the gorges that shape the characteristic landscape of the three Guájares and is the innermost of the three villages. The village is located on the right bank of the Río de la Toba. Mountains and natural landscapes surround Guájar-Fondón; the area is associated with hiking and birdwatching.

White Village on the Río de la Toba

Guájar-Fondón appears as a typical Andalusian village, with traditional white houses, balconies, and courtyards with plants and flowers. These elements stand alongside a landscape shaped by gorges, mountains and the river. As a result, both the architecture and the valley’s natural forms are important reference points for orientation between the village and its surroundings.

Hiking Routes Through the Three Guájares

The “Los tres Guájares” route follows the paths along the Río Toba through Guájar Faragüit, Guájar Fondón and Guájar Alto. Another interregional connection is the GR5 route of the Andalucía Rural Conectada programme. It runs from Guájar Alto via Guájar Faragüit and Guájar-Fondón to Motril. El Castillejo can also be reached via a route that starts in the upper part of Guájar-Fondón. The routes described therefore lead both through the municipality’s three villages and towards the coast near Motril.

El Castillejo: Fortified Settlement on the Rock

El Castillejo is an Andalusian fortified settlement on a steeply sloping hill. The site is located on a rugged limestone rock on the right bank of the Río Toba, at an elevation of 405 metres. At El Castillejo, both the course of the walls and large parts of the interior of the site are visible. A route to Castillejo begins in the upper part of Guájar-Fondón, thereby marking a specific starting point within the village. For visitors, the upper part of the village as the starting point and the visible parts of the site mark two clear spatial reference points.

Church of San Antonio de Padua and Patron Saint’s Festivities

The Church of San Antonio de Padua in Guájar-Fondón was built over a former mosque in the Mudéjar style. After a fire during the Morisco uprisings at the beginning of the 17th century, it was rebuilt. The parish of San Antonio de Padua in Guájar-Fondón is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. Another cultural reference is provided by the patron saint’s festivities in Guájar-Fondón in honour of the Virgen de la Aurora, which take place on the first weekend of August.
