Townscape between Tinaos and Witch Motifs

Traditional Alpujarran Tinaos, meaning covered front extensions or passageways, can be found throughout Soportújar. The town center is grouped around a 16th-century church that was previously a mosque. At the same time, the streets of Soportújar form a themed attraction centered around witches. Figures of witches, goblins, elves, sorceresses and dragons can be seen there.

A Spring, Viewpoint and Traditional Stories

At the Fuente del Dragón, references to paths, tradition and views come together. The spring can be reached from the Plaza de Abastos via Calle Estación. According to tradition, its water has aphrodisiac properties and promotes fertility. The Mirador de Soportújar offers views of the natural surroundings and neighboring places such as Carataunas and Cáñar. At the fountain, the statues of an experienced witch and her apprentice stand beside a large cauldron.

Baba Yaga and Osel Ling

Individual motifs also create their own focal points. A replica of Baba Yaga’s house can be seen at a corner in the upper part of Soportújar. The Buddhist meditation center Osel Ling is located at an altitude of 1,600 meters and is dedicated to meditation in seclusion.

Feria del Embrujo in August

The special thematic connection also extends to the events calendar. The Feria del Embrujo takes place every year in August in Soportújar. Its program includes activities, music, poetry, theater and circus. The Noche de las Brujas features performances, Queimada and music. The August date and the Noche de las Brujas therefore mark two explicitly named components of the festival program.

Sierra Nevada and Named Trails

Those wishing to include trails and landscapes will find several named routes around Soportújar. A traditional path leads uphill from the town over terraces and small agricultural properties to the forest track near the Casa Forestal de Soportújar; the forest track is reached in less than an hour. The upper part of the Sierra is included in the Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada. The Ruta Cicloturista Transnevada is connected with the Sendero Sulayr GR-240, the Sendero GR-7 and the Área Recreativa de Puente Palo. One section of the Sendero Sulayr GR-240 runs from Puente Palo to Capileira through the Acequia del Almiar. One section of the Sendero GR-7 leads in the direction of Cáñar.

Typical Dishes from Soportújar

Typical dishes from the local cuisine appear on the table: Puchero de hinojos, Plato alpujarreño, Migas, Fritá de verduras and Gachas. The five dishes complement the town’s motifs with a culinary aspect.
