Gualchos: Natural Landscapes, Coast and Local History

Gualchos combines protected natural landscapes, coastal destinations, historic buildings and a distinctive food culture to create a diverse picture of Andalusia. The Sierra de Gualchos-Castell de Ferro is a Natura 2000 site and a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) encompassing the municipalities of Motril and Gualchos in the province of Granada. The Sierra was designated as a ZEC by Decree 105/2020 of 28 July 2020. Alongside these natural landscapes are places where the area's history and everyday life are particularly tangible.

Spring, Washhouse and Hiking Route

A notable cultural site in Gualchos is the Fuente de la Mina. It has eleven water outlets, a livestock watering trough and a washhouse. This washhouse was built in 1855 over an enlarged storage basin. Several historical functions therefore come together at the same spring, without reducing the site to a single building. The Fuente de la Mina is also a rest point on the PR-A 233 hiking route. This gives the spring a clearly named reference point for planning a route, while the washhouse preserves its own historical layer.

Coast, Water and Viewpoints

Several beaches are located near Gualchos: Playa Rijana, Playa Castell Del Ferro - Sotillo and Playa Cambriles - Lújar. Playa Calahonda is also located in the surrounding area. La Rijana has clean water suitable for diving and is accessible from the road. In addition, the Mirador Faro Sacratif viewpoint and the Mirador Morros de la Esparragona viewpoint are located around Gualchos. Castles Around Gualchos

Historic buildings are also part of the surrounding area. The Castillo De Calahonda castle is located near Gualchos. The ruins of the Castillo de Castell de Ferro are nearby. The two sites represent different forms of historical presence: here, a castle is named, while there, ruins remain as a specific destination. For a stay focused on Andalusian history, such buildings can be included in the geographical selection alongside natural and coastal destinations, without reducing Gualchos to a single attraction.

Boquerones and Migas con pescado

The local cuisine provides another focal point. Traditional boquerones encañaos are sun-dried and then roasted for tapas and migas. In Gualchos, migas con pescado are served with fried anchovies, horse mackerel and sardines. Both dishes specify particular ingredients and preparation methods, giving the town's culinary side a distinct profile.
