Ferreira between Arab Baths and the Sierra Nevada

Historic traces at the entrance to the town

At the entrance to Ferreira lie the remains of the Arab Baths of Ferreira. The Baños Árabes de Ferreira are designated as a cultural heritage site in the Monumento category as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Their origins date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Their location at the entrance to the town connects the baths with a clearly identified historic setting. Casa Grande and El Cardal

Casa Grande is a manor house built in the Moorish style during the first half of the 16th century. Its agricultural outbuildings included a large tower belonging to an alquería, as well as a cistern that supplied the population. The manor house, tower and cistern thus represent different architectural functions within the complex. El Cardal provides another historical layer. The fortified archaeological site dates from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC and is connected with mining in the Marquesado del Cenete. The historical references thus extend from Casa Grande to the older traces of El Cardal.

From Granada towards the Sierra Nevada

From Granada, roads lead via the A-308 in the direction of Iznalloz and then via the GR-NE-3 to Ferreira. Alternatively, the route runs via the A-308 in the direction of Darro and continues via the GR-NE-3. In both variants, the GR-NE-3 forms the remaining road section to Ferreira. The municipality of Ferreira belongs to the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and lies on its northern side. The town is therefore part of both a cultural and a landscape context.

Alpujarra, old paths and winter activities

The GR-7 leads uphill from Ferreira into the Alpujarra and onward to the villages of Bayárcal and Laroles. In addition, the Ruta de Münzer is a tourist route along old paths from Huércal-Overa to Granada. Easy paths of just under 1 km lead into the pine forest and to viewpoints such as the Mirador de Ferreira and the Mirador del Hornillo. The area also offers various snow-related activities and several cross-country skiing trails. The winter-related activities complement the routes and paths through the pine forest.

Historic atmosphere at the Mercado Medieval

The Mercado Medieval brings together craft stalls, street performances and figures in historic clothing. In Ferreira, local history, archaeological traces, the natural park, hiking trails and the Mercado Medieval thus stand alongside one another as specific themes. The historical points of reference include the baths, Casa Grande and El Cardal; the routes mentioned are the GR-7, the Ruta de Münzer and the short connections to the forest and viewpoints.
