Pórtugos: Fuente Agria, Cultural Heritage and Hiking Trails

Nature and Landscape

The Fuente Agria natural area is located in Pórtugos. It has iron-rich water. The high iron content makes the water appear reddish. El Chorrerón is a waterfall. This waterfall is formed by water from the Fuente Agria spring.

The Fuente Agria area includes a picnic area. This area is equipped for outdoor recreation. The Área Recreativa de Pórtugos is located in the Parque Nacional y Natural de Sierra Nevada. It can be reached via signposted hiking trails. A forest track also leads to it.

The Era Cruzpiedra offers panoramic views. The Sierra de la Contraviesa and the Sierra de Lújar can be seen. The view also extends across parts of the Río Trevélez basin and the villages of the Taha de Pitres.

Culture and History

The Ermita de la Virgen de las Angustias is located in the Paraje Natural de Fuente Agria. The present-day Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación was built in the 1950s. The remains and foundations of an earlier church were used for this construction. This earlier church had been built in the 16th century.

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación is the most important religious church in Pórtugos. At the same time, it is one of the municipality’s most representative historic heritage buildings. The Eras Tradicionales of Pórtugos form part of the ethnographic heritage. They are associated with the traditional threshing of grain.

The traditional fountains of Pórtugos are examples of the vernacular architecture of the Alpujarra. They form part of the municipality’s historical and ethnographic heritage. Thus, one place contains both religious buildings and evidence of traditional architecture and former rural life.

Hiking and Trails

The international GR-7 passes through Pórtugos. The trail comes from Atalbéitar. It then continues in the direction of Busquístar. The first section of the Ruta Medieval de la Alpujarra leads from Pórtugos to Busquístar. Its route passes through Atalbéitar.

The section between Pórtugos and Busquístar is 4.7 km long. It is linear. A duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes is indicated. For hike planning, this provides a specific route length, a defined route format and a stated duration.

The route description therefore specifies both the connection from Pórtugos to Busquístar and the route via Atalbéitar. On the GR-7, Pórtugos is part of the section continuing from Atalbéitar towards Busquístar. On the Ruta Medieval, the village is the starting point of the described section. The length, route format and duration all refer to this clearly defined stage.

Festivals

The Fiesta de San Sebastián on 20 January includes a church service. The celebrations also include a procession. Buñuelos with chocolate are served.
