Landscape and Paths
Órgiva lies in a fertile plain between four rivers. A network of irrigation channels and water reservoirs makes the Órgiva valley appear green. Órgiva lies halfway between the Mediterranean coast and the peaks of the Sierra.
The landscape therefore combines the open plain, the water-shaped valley and the transition to the mountain peaks. Rivers, channels and water reservoirs are just as much a part of this setting as the location between the coast and the Sierra. The Ruta de los Olivos Centenarios adds an explicitly named hiking route to this landscape.
Historical Traces
The site of today’s Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación was formerly home to the first mosque in the Alpujarra. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación was built in 1580 after the end of the Morisco Revolt in the Alpujarras. The parish church contains a depiction of Cristo de la Expiración attributed to the school of Martínez Montañés.
The tower of the Casa-Palacio de los Condes de Sástago played an important defensive role during the Morisco Revolt. The Puente Triana was built between 1890 and 1895 so that the national road could pass through Órgiva.
These buildings reflect different historical contexts: the parish church stands on the site of a former religious place, the tower points to the defence during the Morisco Revolt, and the Puente Triana to the traffic route through Órgiva at that time. The dates each mark a specific point in time, from the construction of the parish church in 1580 to the construction of the bridge between 1890 and 1895.
Buildings and Exhibitions
The former Don José Rivas schools were restored in 2013 for preservation as part of the cultural heritage of the municipality of Órgiva. They were housed in a historic building constructed in the 1950s and were among the first schools established in the Alpujarras.
The Sala de Exposiciones de Pinturas y Esculturas con Motivos Quijotescos was established to mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of the second part of “Don Quixote”. Paintings and sculptures depicting passages from the work are displayed there.
Mining in the Sierra de Lújar dates back to ancient times.
The range of cultural sites therefore extends from a former school building and an exhibition on “Don Quixote” to the long mining history of the Sierra de Lújar. The Don José Rivas schools combine the historic 1950s building with their early role within the Alpujarras’ education system; they were restored in 2013 for preservation as part of the cultural heritage.
Tourist Information Points
Órgiva’s tourist information office is located at Plaza Alpujarra. The Oficina de Turismo – Interpretación de la Minería is also one of the tourist information points.
The two information points mentioned have different designations: one is located at Plaza Alpujarra, while the other already refers in its name to the interpretation of mining. General tourist information and the mining theme thus appear as separate information points within Órgiva.
