Nature

Huétor Santillán is part of Sierra de Huétor Nature Park. The nature park was designated on July 28, 1989, and thus forms the designated landscape area around several trails and routes in the locality.

The Majalijar hiking trail leads to the summit of Majalijar. Majalijar is 1,878 meters high, making it the highest mountain in Sierra de Huétor Nature Park. The elevation marks the summit as a prominent point within this natural area.

From the summit of Majalijar, there are views over large parts of Sierra de Huétor Nature Park and the neighboring Sierra Arana. Golden eagles, Spanish imperial eagles, or griffon vultures may possibly be observed there.

The Las Mimbres hiking trail follows the Acequia de Fardes through various Mediterranean vegetation areas. Willows grow along the trail and were traditionally used by local craftspeople. This trail therefore combines the course of the irrigation channel with the plant species and traces of use mentioned above.

The Huétor Santillán–Prado Negro route is more than 55 kilometers long. It passes through characteristic forest landscapes in the heart of the nature park. The route begins in the town center of Huétor Santillán and leads from there into the natural area.

The starting point of the Cañada del Sereno hiking trail can be reached from Granada via the A-92 toward Guadix. To get there, take the Parque Natural Sierra de Huétor exit and continue to the Los Peñoncillos forest ranger station. Thus, both the highway and the named exit and forest ranger station are part of the route described.

In Huétor Santillán, hiking and interesting cycling routes are offered as recreational activities in a natural setting. The trails mentioned therefore range from individual summits and landscape viewpoints to longer routes through the nature park.

Culture

The parish church Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación was built in the 16th century. It was renovated in the 18th century.

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación contains an ornate Mudéjar wooden ceiling and several sculptures from the 18th century. The construction period, renovation, and furnishings thus point to several historical layers within the same church building.

At the entrance to the old town of Huétor Santillán, in Colonia del Río, there is an original bridge over the Darro.

The old town is characterized by narrow streets. Its urban layout is considered typically Muslim.

The Valle del Darro is protected as an asset of cultural interest. It bears the designation Bien de Interés Cultural, or BIC for short. The protection category is Zona Patrimonial. The valley lies partly within the municipal area of Huétor Santillán.

The Valle del Darro extends from the river's source areas in Huétor Santillán to the urban area of Granada. It contains traces of settlement from various civilizations, from Roman times to the present day. The course of the valley connects the locality with the wider area as far as Granada.

The Qaryat-Al-Watá route begins at Plaza de la Fortaleza. This square is also known as Fuentecilla, so two names have been passed down for the same starting point.
