Güevéjar: History, Landscape and Culture

Güevéjar is located in Andalusia, the autonomous community in southern Spain. The town is just 9 km from the capital, Granada, while panoramic views of the Vega de Granada unfold. Between Güevéjar and Nívar lies El Castillejo, a protected archaeological zone classified as a Site of Cultural Interest.

Archaeology and Culture

The El Castillejo archaeological site comprises a settlement area, a necropolis and a storage area. In Güevéjar, the Casa de la Cultura serves as a centre for activities and workshops. Lectures and municipal events are also held there.

The Sala de Exposiciones provides space for art exhibitions and photography exhibitions. In addition, presentations of the local culture take place there.

Güevéjar therefore brings together different forms of local and cultural history: El Castillejo preserves the layout of an archaeological site, while the Casa de la Cultura and Sala de Exposiciones are used for contemporary cultural events and exhibitions.

Landscape

Güevéjar is located on the western slope of the Castillejo de Nívar. The Castillejo de Nívar is known as the Peñón de Bartolo. At the same time, it forms the last extension of the Sierra de la Yedra.

Güevéjar offers panoramic views of the Vega de Granada and is just 9 km from the capital.

History

The earthquake of 1755 almost completely destroyed Güevéjar. On 25 December 1884, another earthquake once again brought destruction to the town.

The rebuilt town centre was created after two devastating earthquakes. One occurred in the mid-18th century, the other in the last third of the 19th century.

Urban planning principles of the 19th century governed the redevelopment. Straight streets define the structure. The intersections meet at right angles and are arranged around the Plaza de la Constitución.

These features make the layout of the town centre as the result of reconstruction legible: straight streets, right-angled intersections and the Plaza de la Constitución belong to the same urban order.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Ildefonso y Santa Cristina was built in 1887. Its design is Neo-Gothic historicist. Pointed arches and a rose window are among its forms. Other elements include pinnacles and buttresses, as well as a stylised profile.

Routes and Festivals

The Camino de las Alquiferías is one of Güevéjar’s hiking routes. It offers particularly beautiful views of the local landscape. The Ruta del Califato also passes through Güevéjar.

Two differently named routes can therefore be identified in Güevéjar: the Camino de las Alquiferías is mentioned as a hiking route with views of the local landscape, while the Ruta del Califato passes through the town.

Güevéjar’s patron saint festivities take place in June in honour of the patron saint, San Juan Bautista. In September, the patron saint, Virgen de las Angustias, is honoured.

Thus, in addition to archaeology, landscape and local history, two annually designated festival dates are also part of public life in Güevéjar: June with San Juan Bautista and September with the Virgen de las Angustias.
