Guadix Between the Basin and the Badlands

Guadix lies in the Hoya de Guadix, a basin surrounded by clay escarpments. The landscape around Guadix has been shaped by wind, water and human activity. The Mirador Padre Poveda offers views of Guadix’s historic and monumental ensemble as well as the Badlands.

Cave Quarter and Original Living Spaces

The Mirador Padre Poveda is located in the heart of the Cave Quarter next to the Ermita Nueva church. The Centro de Interpretación Cuevas de Guadix is located inside several original cave dwellings. It explains the origins and historical development of living in caves. It also presents local traditions and craft professions. The combination of original living spaces, history and crafts gives the visit a clear focus on Guadix’s distinctive form of housing. The subject of cave dwelling is not limited to architecture. By bringing together its origins, historical development, local traditions and craft professions, the centre presents several aspects of this form of housing.

Cathedral, Roman Theatre and Alcazaba

Guadix Cathedral stands above the remains of a Visigothic cathedral and a major Arab mosque. The Teatro Romano Acci is a monumental complex covering almost 6,000 m², built at the beginning of the second quarter of the 1st century AD. The Alcazaba of Guadix was built in the 10th century during the caliphate period. The Visigothic, Arab, Roman and caliphal connections can be traced through specific structures in these three buildings. Tickets for the Teatro Romano Acci are purchased at the tourist office. Visits to the Teatro Romano Acci are listed for Sundays at 11 a.m.; the purchase of tickets and the appointment are therefore part of the practical planning for this visit. The size of the Teatro Romano Acci can be taken into account as a separate sightseeing point when planning. The stated time of 11 a.m. on Sundays provides a specific time reference for this purpose.

Olive Mill and Accitanian Cuisine

The Almazara de Paulenca – Museo del Aceite is an 18th-century olive mill in a rural Mudéjar style and, at the same time, an ethnographic olive oil museum. The building therefore represents both the history of olive oil production and its ethnographic context. In Guadix, small samples of Accitanian cuisine are served as an aperitif. The cuisine appears in small portions as an aperitif, while the museum focuses on a specific craft. Thus, olive oil production, a museum visit and Accitanian cuisine come together in this thematic area.

Cascamorras and Living Tradition

The origins of the Cascamorras tradition in Guadix date back to the middle of the 15th century. The Cascamorras festival is celebrated in Guadix on 9 September.
