Tocón: Mudéjar Church, Torre de Clementino and Patron Saint’s Festival

Tocón draws attention to a combination of Mudéjar architecture, historic buildings and a vibrant festival tradition. In the first week of August, the village celebrates the patron saint’s festival in honour of Nuestra Señora del Socorro. The programme for the 2025 patron saint’s festival was also part of this village character: it included a traditional paella popular. In Tocón, both religious tradition and a specific culinary element of the festival programme therefore take centre stage.

The Torre de Clementino on Calle de la Torre

One striking building is the Torre de Clementino. It is incorporated into a private house on Calle de la Torre in Tocón. The ground floor of the tower was formerly a cistern, pointing to an earlier use of the building. The Torre de Clementino also has a terrace with a surrounding parapet. At approximately 12 metres high, the building offers three clearly recognisable features for visitors to consider: the former cistern on the ground floor, the structural design of the terrace and the tower’s approximate dimensions. Its integration into a private house is as much part of the building’s character as its historic fabric.

Church with a pronounced Mudéjar character

Tocón’s church preserves architectural elements from the early years of the 16th century and has a strongly pronounced Mudéjar character. Its rectangular floor plan is defined by plain walls; there are no chapels. It also features a low-set Alfarje ceiling, which adds another clearly defined element to the interior architecture. At the centre of the new altarpiece is currently a crucifix carved in 1771 by the sculptor Diego Sanchez Saravia. The church thus combines its architectural form, spatial character and a specifically dated work of art, without reducing its individual features to a mere list of attractions.

Ancient site and regional cultural attractions

The Villa Romana de Salar, an ancient site, lies in the surroundings of Tocón. The wider regional area is also home to the Casa Real del Soto de Roma, a palace. The Museo del Agua, a museum, and Alcazaba, a historic site, are also located there. These destinations broaden Tocón’s cultural setting through a range of themes: ancient history, representative architecture, museum culture and historic complexes. Mountain, viewpoints and park
