Cortijos Nuevos: Nature Park, El Yelmo and Regional Festivals

Nature and Routes

Cortijos Nuevos is located in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park. Cortijos Nuevos is considered one of the most important starting points for reaching destinations throughout the Sierra de Segura.

Route 1, “Cortijos Nuevos–La Tiná Nueva,” begins in Cortijos Nuevos and follows the A-314 towards Beas de Segura. Route 2, “Cortijos Nuevos–Pico de El Yelmo,” offers one option on foot and one by car for reaching El Yelmo. It follows a path to Castillo de Gutamarta and reaches the summit of El Yelmo at an altitude of 1,809 metres. There are numerous caves on the western slope of El Yelmo where visitors can go caving. The summit of El Yelmo has a take-off site for free flight.

Route 3, “Cortijos Nuevos–Cortijo de Romillán,” heads towards the Cortijo de Romillán area and crosses the Río Trujala via the Puente del Moro.

Regional Connections

From the road leading from Beas de Segura via the Collado del Puerto, there are views of El Yelmo, Segura de la Sierra and Hornos. The A-314 runs via the Collado del Puerto and Cañada Catena towards Beas de Segura and the N-322. The A-319 connects the area near Cortijos Nuevos with the Tranco Reservoir, Coto Ríos and Cazorla; it is reached from the A-317 approximately two kilometres from Cortijos Nuevos.

Festivals and Events

On 12 October, Cortijos Nuevos celebrates the festival in honour of the Virgen del Pilar, the patron saint of Cortijos Nuevos. The celebration includes a procession through the streets of the town. The traditional San Isidro pilgrimage associated with Cortijos Nuevos takes place on 15 May in the La Lomilla area next to the hamlet of El Ojuelo.

The Festival Internacional del Aire takes place in early June at the Cortijos Nuevos football pitch and in the surrounding area. It includes air sports, films about flying, sporting activities, air displays and a fair.

Cortijos Nuevos is listed as the venue for the Valle-Absoluta round of the XXII Memorial “Santiago González Santoro” de Bolos Serranos on 6 June 2026.

Active Experiences

At El Contadero Aventuras in Cortijos Nuevos, the offerings include mountain biking tours with specialised guides and an orienteering course in the forest.

Local Traditions and Products

A livestock trail used for transhumance from the high mountains of the Sierra de Segura crosses Cortijos Nuevos from east to west.

Olive oil with the “Sierra de Segura” designation of origin is produced by the La Casilla and El Ojuelo cooperatives. Traditional home slaughtering of pigs is common in Cortijos Nuevos, producing morcillas, chorizos and other cured sausages.
