El Ojuelo among springs, paths and festival traditions

Village center and water sources

El Ojuelo is located at a central crossroads, next to which there is a small park. A small chapel stands on the small central square. The Abrevadero de El Ojuelo is located on a village square where Calle Fuente meets the livestock trail. The village square, chapel, park and water source are therefore among the defining features of the village center.

Several springs are part of the village landscape. The spring next to the washhouse of El Ojuelo supplies abundant, fresh and clear water all year round. It supplies the fertile Vega and the olive groves around El Ojuelo. Above El Ojuelo there is a large spring described as a rest area for replenishing drinking water. The two water sources are located at different points in the terrain and complement the picture of a village shaped by springs. In this way, water, agriculture and the village paths are interconnected in the village landscape.

Paths between the village and the Sierra

Municipal Route 2, “Cortijos Nuevos–Pico de El Yelmo,” leads to El Ojuelo. The path from El Ojuelillo, also known as El Ojuelo Chico, is referred to as the old Camino de Mesta. The livestock trail running through El Ojuelo continues to be used for transhumance and rural connections.

The section on the old Camino de Mesta also serves as a landing strip for paragliders launching from El Yelmo. To the west, a route leads from El Ojuelo to Municipal Route 3. Historical path names, present-day rural use and the routes toward El Yelmo thus come together to create a diverse landscape.

Fiestas and living local history

Today’s Fiestas del Ojuelo developed from a pilgrimage to the summit of El Yelmo in the 1960s. The traditional Fiestas del Olivo take place in El Ojuelo in June. The Fiestas del Ojuelo also include the celebration of the Holy Family.

The program of the 2024 Fiestas del Ojuelo included Bolos Serranos, competitions, musical performances, inflatable water games, a foam party and ZumbaGym. Near El Ojuelo, in the La Lomilla area, a traditional pilgrimage in honor of Saint Isidore takes place on May 15. The fourth edition of the El Robledo / El Ojuelo road race, with several categories, was announced for March 28, 2026. The date of March 28, 2026 falls before the Fiestas del Olivo in June.

Olive cultivation and local character

Olive cultivation is identified as El Ojuelo’s main livelihood. The history of processing is also connected to the village: before moving in 2006, S.C.A. Gutamarta operated an olive oil mill in El Ojuelo. The olive groves around the village and the fertile Vega, together with the springs, paths and festivals, reflect the agricultural character of the landscape.
