Sedella: Nature Park, Wine and Mudéjar Heritage

Nature and landscape

Sedella is one of the municipalities in the Province of Málaga located within the Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama.

The Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama encompasses high mountains, deeply carved valleys, streams, extensive grazing areas and forests.

Sedella lies in a lush natural landscape where the Matanzas, Encinar and Granados streams carry abundant water and support diverse vegetation.

The Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama was designated a Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA) in 2003 and a Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) in 2016.

The Centro de Visitantes Sedella is located in Sedella, in the part of the Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama belonging to the Province of Málaga.

It has a reception desk, an environmental shop and information about Andalusia’s network of protected natural areas.

History and Mudéjar heritage

Sedella is one of five villages along the 40-kilometre Ruta Mudéjar; the region’s civil Mudéjar heritage includes the Casa Torreón in Sedella.

The Castillo of Sedella is a small fortress adapted to the terrain and dating from between the 10th and 15th centuries.

The Castillo of Sedella is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).

The ruins of a large fortress remain on a hill near Sedella.

The original Iglesia de San Andrés was built at the beginning of the 16th century; following the severe damage caused by the Morisco revolt, only the tower remained.

The Iglesia de San Andrés houses religious sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as an 18th-century painting.

The Molino de Montosa, also known as Molino Alto, stands on the slope of a hill near the centre of Sedella and has existed since at least 1752.

Restoration of the Molino de Montosa began in 1994; inside are a milling room on the upper floor and original Mazarí tile floors.

The Puente Romano is a well-preserved stone bridge with a single arch and presumably medieval origins.

The Puente Romano is located about 500 metres from the centre of Sedella.

The Ermita de la Virgen de la Esperanza stands on the southeastern edge of Sedella, dates from the 17th century and is very well preserved.

Other places: Los Villalones, Cortes De La Frontera, Bermejo, Marina de Casares, Coín, Archidona, Torrox and Macharaviaya.

Hiking

The GR-249 Gran Senda de Málaga passes through the upper part of Sedella and runs above the village along an irrigation canal.
